I always approach these tournaments with a degree of trepidation, but, as ever, end up enjoying them. What I've been particularly impressed with is how they are running both the games and the para-games concurrently. Has that always been the case with the commonwealth games? Or are all one event anyway?

I didn't even realise that was the case; have they broadcast any para-games coverage? That's a shame in a sense- because it'll naturally be overshadowed/get less media coverage than the 'able bodied' events.

I'm enjoying the boxing most so far, it's more exciting now they've forgone headguards & reverted to 3*3 rounds with the "10-point Must" system.

It is definitely the case with the swimming which they have been showing, and, I think, with the cycling too.

I think it is a good idea as it makes all the athletes feel like they are part of the same event, but I do take your point.

    I wouldn't bother watching.

The whole concept of a commonwealth/empire is very outdated and harks back centuries. From a sporting point of view it is decidedly third rate. The rest of the world ignores.

Do you want to convince the Australian women's 4x100m freestyle relay team of that? They broke the World record.

Maybe they're all blokes or something lol.... You know them Sheila's.

How did the Bangladeshi replay team or the Zimbabwean relay team get on? My point is, probably 50% of the contestants participating wouldn't reach the standards set for an Olympic games.

As far as I'm aware, any members of the Commonwealth are members because they want to be. If they wanted to leave they could couldn't they?

I'm enjoying the games and have found myself cheering on athletes and para-athletes from all the home countries. I was even cheering on a pair of Scottish riders earlier!!

Sure, but we entered Eddie the Eagle into the Olympics and then there was Eric the Eel.

Fran Halsall won the women's 50m freestroke in the fastest time in the world this year, don't write the whole tournament off so easily. Not all of the Commonwealth Games is top level, but it is still enjoyable.

The cycle tandem won by the Scots was one of the best races of the night, particularly the 2nd of the three...

Fingy, you're a top bloke but that's some bitter bullsh*t right there. No offence man.

I was watching the other day and there was a bird after winning something and the Flower of Scotland was belting out. I only realised then that there was no Team GB in these games <doh>

Glasgow seem to be hosting them very well. Hopefully the home Nations will rake the medals in

The Commonwealth Games are called the Friendly games for a reason...the concept is a little old fashioned( nod to Finglas) but actually it still works....the addition of some para sports, which for the first time count to the final total is excellent...and if you watch as much coverage as I do.....BBC do televise a lot of the para sports....really enjoying it.
Should have been there as I got a position as a Clydesider.....but that is a different story....so there is a lot of longing in my watching.

I'm heading to the boxing this afternoon - just back from my hols.

It's being very well hosted up here, and I've been lucky enough to do some work at a couple of the venues - it's supposed to be "the friendly games" and certainly appears that way.

We had the Queens baton relay in the local park last week (only 300m away from house!) So kids all headed there - Scotland is certainly making an effort to get as many kids involved as possible, and leave a "legacy" of sports for the youth to aspire to - and the area where the games are being held was basically a slum before all the regeration work started, and will have some great housing once the event has cleared up

    Is it shown in Ireland?

By your arguments there should never be any sporting events unless they were global and featuring only the best. England v Ireland at rugby? irrelevant unless they are playing New Zealand. European Championship football - ban it,only the World Cup counts.

The Commonwealth Games are not competition for the Olympics. And your understanding of what the Commonwealth is may need reviewing - its most recent members Mozambique and Rwanda, were never British colonies (Portugal and Belgium respectively played that role). presumably they saw something of value in it.

Yes it is shown on the BBC SB but nobody has any interest.

From a sporting point of view, sportsmen and women are judged on what they have have achieved in European Championships, World Championships and Olympic games. People will win gold medals at the Commonwealth games who won't even reach Olympic finals.

What value do you see in your country having a relationship with the likes of Mozambique and Rwanda?

What a ridiculous pile of ****e...!

you really have outdone yourself here mate

take it from someone who had desires on competeing in the commonwealth games (not including Judo), that is an insult to the athletes that put all the hard graft in to get there....

I take offence to that, and if you'd like to go tell jessica Ennis and sir Chris hoy......Let me know how you get on ! - #stupid

Fingy, what on earth is wrong with you man?!! How the hell could you possibly have a problem with a community of loosely-aligned friendly nations coming together to participate in games with one another?

I think I have an idea though. You're the Irish equivalent of Churchill's pups who post on here

Grossly inaccurate. How can you speak for everyone? Anyone interested in athletics etc would be watching it.
