Me and Mrs Rangercol are on the wrong end of a lovely 2008 San Lorenzo Rioja.

Tasty, but a bit too warm this evening for a meaty red for me. Finished off yesterday's pinot grigio, now onto a sauvignon blanc. Ultra chilled, this is for quaffing not quality. And the pizza doesn't deserve quality.

Have you tried a white rioja Col? Very more-ish, I can recommend Monopole, 4 euros something in Majorca probably £8 over here, irritatingly.

If you like Spanish Reds Col, try a Toro (not the bull)... Pintia is nice or the Ribera del Dueros. Me, I had my 'Ollie Reed' moment on the 24th of May so keeping it sober. Will be in the UK next week so may have a sneaky one over there with family.

Fair enough on the red, but after the week I've had the boiling inside is far greater than the boiling outside.

I don't see the point of Pinot Grigio, all it ever seems to taste of is cold. I had a a rather splendid glass (just the one unfortunately) of a Poilly-Fume yesterday, but, yes with Pizza you need quantity as they generally are so salty.

Pinot grigio, sauvignon blanc, white rioja are our 'house white's'. We get through at least a bottle every night (depending on stress of the day) and my criteria for purchase is blistering dry, less than £8 (these are gulped, not sipped), and once home chilled to buggery. For proper drinking I'll go Pouilly-Fume/Fuisse, Sancerre or the better NZ sauvignon blancs on the whites. Nice compromise is Viognier.

I really love red but my knowledge is limited to Italian wines and I learned while I lived there that the really nice stuff (in between sold in buckets and new mortgage) often doesn't get to shops - label less bottles restaurant owners bring out once they know you are a regular, direct from the family vinyards. So I drink a lot less red than I should (there's idiot logic in there) but tend to go for a proper bottle when I do.

I have a bottle of Chateau D'Yquem sauternes in a cool dark place, given to us as a wedding anniversary present in 2003. As the 1986 vintage is £250 a bottle I'm struggling to imagine the occasion which will demand its consumption. Perhaps my son getting a job and moving out may be it, but that will be at least 3 years off......which is good, because apparently it will be at peak drinking time then.

Can recommend Lidl's Pedro Jiminez white. An outstanding Friday 'pizza' wine for on £3.49. Great wines at Lidl

I'm currently getting outside a smooth Californian chardonnay. I know it's smooth 'cos it says so on the label.

For a glugging white, I too would go Spanish.

Is there a wine bar in Shepherds Bush? I'm sure we could meet up for a glass or two there instead of the usual Pride down the Crown and Sceptre once in a while.

Test bottle will be bought tomorrow. If successful I'll be back for the crate.

I got very snobby about chardonnay when it was all New Labour and over oaked. But had some recently and was pleasantly surprised.

Let's research that, I like the C & S but it's a bear pit on match day. There must be something close by.

Hopefully they've got one of those grapefruits with cocktail sticks loaded with cheese and pineapple sticking out of it, or, at the very least, a nice pate on Ritz crackers .......

You'll be joining us though, won't you Col.

I'll get right on to it. It will be more interesting than either the work I'm supposed to be doing, or the article I'm tying to write.......
