Shocked to read this, completely passed me by...

    Duncan happy to play part

Duncan Watmore is basking in the fountain of knowledge provided by the first team during the club’s pre-season campaign.
The youngster started in the Black Cats’ 3-0 win over Hartlepool United, putting in a composed performance at the back to continually thwart the home attack.

“I’m really enjoying it and it is obviously a great experience, having John O’Shea boss you about is a privilege and it is fantastic to learn from the first-team players.

“They have so much knowledge about the game and just being with them day in day out is awesome, so personally I’m just trying to work hard and impress the manager.”

Watmore traditionally operates in forward role, and although he was deployed as a right back he is relishing the opportunity to enhance his ability.

“When playing with the first team you focus on things that don’t usually consider, it is so easy to learn and it makes you a better player all around.

“I’m also trying out a new position at right-back, it is a new dimension that I am trying to learn but so far I am really enjoying the transition.”

Anyone know enough about him to know whether he'll be ok as a fullback?

Monty will be going ****ing mental.

I watched him against Hartlepool and he was very accomplished. Looked a real threat when going forward and was always looking to get past the full back. His positional play could do with some work but that's surely to be expected. Overall though, a very promising display and it didn't look like he was just learning the role to me.

I disagree fella, I thought he looked awkward. He wanted to run at the winger from the position and had Catt's constantly telling him to calm down <laugh>. When he did get forward he was fantastic but the role looked alien to him defensively. As an attacking player we've got a player there, but not at fullback he need his hand holding big time and I think he'd be wasted.

He is not a defender...His natural instincts is to run at defenders...He will be wasted at the back.

The lads obviously desperate to break into the first team and he obviously sees playing right back as his best opportunity.
He's a cracking young player but going off the Pools match he's certainly not Premiership rightback material!

Id like to know why he hasnt been selected for Portugal???

Could be very, very smart coaching by the club, looking to use him RM but looking to build up his defensive awareness to provide cover for RWB.

Would be very savvy to improve the defensive aspects of the wide players early doors.

There'd be a lot of work to do, he played right in front of me and Home and Away, it's not that he was bad at it as he wasn't, didn't have much to do, just looked unsure of what to do positionally, once he pressed up the pitch and attacked he was great, hit the byline when he wanted. I'd develop him as an attacking player and adapt him to play both sides. Looks like he's going to be bang on if he's doing what he's best at. Such a talent.

Attacks without fear mate. Shame he's not going to Portugal. His dad has confirmed it. He claims none of the kids have gone but I don't know if that includes Agnew, Ba, Karlsson and Mavrias.

It sounds like he's a real find and they want to keep him but just not sure where he's best suited. Or maybe, he was just filling in.

    Hope we keep the lad.

I'd say filling in, hope so anyway, I'd hate us to waste developing his attacking threat by converting him into a wing back. The lad is really direct.

Not sure about the others but there was an interview on safc.com today where Ba was saying he was looking forward to the Portugal trip so i reckon he's in at least... or he's just really excited about his family holiday :p

He must have been filling in, he's best at running at defenders causing havoc rather than defending. At Altrincham he played as attacking mifielder or striker scoring 14 goals in 39 games.
Great attitude though - you can see he'll do whatever it takes to get into the first team.
I hope he's given a chance this season.
