Just found these terrific images of Carrow Road from 1977 that bring back happy memories for me and I'm sure many others. Some not so fond memories too as these were taken at a time when football hooliganism was at it's height. I actually preferred Carrow Road as it was, with a large open terrace at the River End, as we could get 30,000+, and did, quite often in the mid 70's. Is this an open invite to the Binners, being of a historical nature.......
When I first went to CR in 1950 it was open terrace at the River End and South Stand, covered terracing in the Barclay and the only seating was long wooden benches( with numbers painted on the benches to indicate seat numbers) in the old wooden main stand. You had to take your own cushion or hire one from the Club or your arse was numb for a week. This stand did not go all the way down as in front of it was a ' pit ' where kids were safe from a ' surge ' on the main terracing. If you stood in this pit your eyes were level with the players ankles. The capacity was 38k - increased to 44k when they extended the South Stand - and was mainly male only. There are older fans than me on here but I doubt if anybody can remember going to the Nest. In the early/mid 60's I went to a fair number of away games and the state of some of the grounds you would not believe. Compared to somewhere like the Emirates you would have thought we were talking about 500 years ago rather than 50. Going to an away game in those days was an experience in itself. The A11 went over Cringleford Bridge, through Hethersett, through Wymondham, Attleborough, Thetford - you get the picture. I used to go to Coventry a lot in those days - it would take at least 5 or 6 hours!! When they built the M1 I could cut across to it from the A45 to Newport Pagnell and it took an hour off my journey. The first time I used it I was just about the only person on it - everybody was scared of this new fangled idea. Good old days - my arse!! Don't believe what us oldies try and tell you.
LOL Those 'toilets' at Carrow Road in the '70s were horrendous, basically you pissed up against a brick wall
Toilets? Toilets? In about 1962 I went to an away game - I think it was Bury but I might be wrong - and there was one sit down cubicle in a little shed but if you wanted a piss you did it in an open pit.
Anyone remember the half-time scoreboard where a little man would hang numbers beneath letters. You had a list of matches on the back of the programme with a letter preceding it. i.e. 'A' = Arsenal v Spurs etc.
1977 was my 5th year of going to matches and I can remember the earthed up and roofless RiverEnd. The South Stand was also earthed up. I can also remember the violence of the ManUtd fans in April 1977 when they ended up climbing on to the roof and tearing the corragated panels off. You just don't get hooliganism like you used to back then!
I can remember waiting for the half-time scores to go up under the letters, KIO. There was something special about the atmosphere back then. I may be wrong, but Cromer's photo looks like the RiverEnd when it was rebuilt with a proper stand, a roof and executive boxes in the late 70s.

While we're at it, KIO I can remember a gloomy winter afternoon when the same Ted MacDougall rose above a pack of players to head the ball past the helpless keeper to win the match. The place went wild. I think it was West Ham.
Ted 'SuperMac-Dougall' was my childhood hero Rick, do you remember his hat-rick against Villa when we beat them 5 - 3 ?

What year did Man U kick off down hear? I remember the game and being there as they climbed onto the roof at the Barclay then fell through the old corigated asbestos sheeting !! Made the main news that night.
