Not at all mate, it was a totally serious question and I appreciate the answer. We come to the matches on the A19 and I wondered why Acklam was built taking up so much space. Having said that, there's quite a lot of spare industrial land and they don't need to worry about having a nice view
Spent many an hour in Pentonville and Holloway, on the right side of the keys. Horrendous, terrifying places, just the thought of it, is enough to keep me on the straight and narrow.
Smug, prisons were originally built in a cartwheel design, the hub of the cartwheel is what is called the "Centre" and the spokes are the landings. The idea is that the Officer i/c can stand in the centre and manage the wing from a position with sufficient visibility and supervision to ensure that they can respond appropriately to any incident. Modern designs such as H blocks are dangerous to work in and require more staff, but were designed, in consultation with psychologists, to appear less regimented to the prisoners. Some wings are up to five landings high, but the main reason that tower block prisons are not built in this country is that most prisons are either working or training prisons and an expansive floor space is required for communal areas and workshops.
If I was to spend time in prison I'd make sure I would commit the crime in Austria -their nicks put 5 star hotels to shame http://izismile.com/2009/03/16/i5_stars_prison_justizzentrum_leoben_34_pics.html
I'd imagine they'd want to avoid creating too many dark corners BTW, perhaps you & Blunham can solve another mystery. I suspect the term 'nick-name' comes from the prison environment where people would be reluctant to use their 'outside' name. Wot u fink?
I have never heard that one Smug, I always understood that nickname came from the word moniker, I could be wrong though
Just checked it mate, I was way off again "The term "nickname" originated as an Anglo-Saxon word: ekename. In the Anglo-Saxon tongue, "eke" meant "also" or "added." The term seemed just a bit awkward to pronounce; so, it became slurred, converting ekename to nekename and finally to become nickname. "
Did you know that the term 'nick' meaning prison comes from the word 'niche' i.e a hole in which to hide something away? Nah, me neither, more bollocks from Smug I'm afraid ...... come back tomorrow for more ludicrous ****e passed off as fact
Those hunger strikers in the H blocks got right on my tits. Spreading **** all over the walls, filthy bastards. Thatcher ****ed up though because she let them die & then caved in to their demands.
