But it wouldn't produce more games, it would just reduce the amount of games in the Europa league by putting them back in the appropriate competition. spread across three competitions instead of two is what I'm proposing. So instead of fa cup winners and league cup winners going into the Europa league, they go into the cup winners cup, allowing you to get rid of the Europa group stage and having both the cup winners and Uafa cup as just a knock out competition. it's would reduce the amount of games in Europe, not the premier league. Domesticity the league can remain the same.

Definitely mate. The Europa league has just become some kind bin to shove teams in who aren't in the champions league, if it was scraped you could bring back just one qualifying round for each of the three competitions instead of none in the champions league and the 3 in the Europa.

Read the op, skipped the rest, is that a serious question?

SAFC in Europe...why would anyone want to dismiss the idea? Give up on that, may as well say '**** it', might as well be in the championship, it would be more fun, rahter than a wannabe.

Spme **** clubs have been in europe. none more so than the **** tip ull/ but at least they are going to do it....

The UEFA cup is a boring, protracted affair where you play no mark teams from no mark countries. Far too many games now. They should have left it as it was in the beginning, a straight knock out affair of about seven rounds, home and away, like what it was when we won it. <ok>

Agree with the vast majority on here...Champs League and Europa need to become unseeded knockouts from the beginning and NO champs league dropouts. Unfortunately will never happen as the Barca's, Madrid's etc of this world would then be at less of an advantage <doh>

Genuinely believe you might think differently if you'd been there. Can only describe it as similar to the 1-0 win over Juventus the year we lost our first 3 group games and won the last 3 to qualify. Still the only team ever to do that. I'll admit the groups were fairly dollop but I'd still rather be in them than not, the added excitement of a midweek game.

I'm not knocking the UEFA cup latter stages, it's just the chew on of getting there. I've been to three grounds in Europe to watch us, brilliant experiences.

Yeah can't argue with that, still, you have to have some sort of aspirations or else as someone else mentioned, you may aswell just play in the championship and play more games and get cheap tickets?

Fair doos, wouldn't actually expect you to make a report public anyway.

I see what you mean now Bri, my mistake sorry mate.

I have read somewhere that they are looking at the format of the Europa league for next season, something might come from that review.

I didn't realise Hull had played the 2nd leg, against the pub team, and scraped through with 10 minutes to go.

I noticed a mention of Lokeren, in today's paper, and realised they must have qualified .... well done <ok>

So I checked on the attendance for Hull's first ever European home game and it kinda proved the point the thread was about.

Just over 20,000 ............ less than Hull's worst league gate last season iirc.

I get your point Smug and the early rounds really are a case of "who the hell are they" but there are teams like PSV, Villareal, Inter Milan, Real Sociedad, Feyenoord, Panathanaikos, Lyon, Borussia M and even the mighty Hull Tigers in it. Add in the teams that will drop down from the Champions League and the final stages of it will have some big draws - are you sure you wouldn't relish the prospect of some of those teams coming to the Stadium of Light?

Cards on the table I don't go to many Newcastle games and in truth have only been to probably 30 games in the last decade but my first game was a 2-1 win qualifying for the champions league and my second was a Uefa cup game against erm... I think it was the mighty CSKA Sofia (or perhaps FA cup against Tottenham, not sure the order they came in). For me it was an opportunity to get into what was then an almost exclusively 'season ticket' stadium.

I have little doubt that at some point in the next decade Sunderland will compete in European competition of some variety and when they do I'd recommend getting along to a match - if you can use it as an excuse to travel then even better, I haven't but every friend I know who has is keen to go again at the next opportunity irrespective of whether the game they saw was any good!
