Oh dear. 15 people killed and more than 200 injured as a school has been shelled in Gaza.

To get yourself an advantage? The jobs market for graduates is so fiercely competitive that anything you can do to get yourself noticed must be worth a shot.

A friend of mine did unpaid work for Virgin Media when he left Uni, at a level where they simply would not have taken the risk on employing an unknown quantity. Within a few months they took him on a permanent contract earning close to 100k a year. He could have applied for that job 1000 times over and he would never have got it, why would they risk it when they could employ someone with experience. Sure, he could have been less ambitious and taken a job at a lower level, but instead he put himself out for a few months and has saved himself probably years of having to climb the ladder. Okay, it might not work out this well for everyone, but if you truly have talent you want to showcase then it is worth thinking about.

It was for a charity, so I can't be too critical. They gave £10 expenses a day, though at the time my ticket cost £22ish.

News coming through now that actually it was rockets fired from within Gaza (i.e. by Hamas) which fell short of their targets. There are also suspicions that Hamas use these UN schools as shelters, so there's a chance they just bombed some of their own (and civilians too, unfortunately).

The people who wholly support either Palestine or Israel are idiots. Don't know why America completely supports Israel and gives billions a year, when a fair bit of that goes on weapons and creates more problems.

Palestine have incredibly high numbers of civilian casualties and are just defending themselves from being wiped off the map. As Joe points out, the actions of Hamas are terrible but it's a lot easier to sympathise with the Palestinian cause.

    Oh PL......

Your point regarding rugby was fundamentally bollocks though.

That's true, I forgot to mention about the ridiculous amounts of penalties that are given in every match.

What they seem to fail to realise is if they're not interested in a thread, the best way to respond is to ignore it and let it fall of it's own accord. Rather than being dicks.

There's truth in the fact that interning to get experience is of great use, but most people don't have the resources to work for free for several months to a year, unless one has fairly well-off parents.

My education is in a field that has increasingly become fond of such things, but when I graduated (with a large bank loan) I had to start working immediately because payments were coming due, one cannot get loans for internships, and my family is not wealthy by any stretch. Net result is that I have never worked a job in said field, despite graduating damned near at the top of my Honours class, despite having the better part of a Masters under by belt (also cut short for financial reasons). But the kids with wealthy parents who perhaps weren't as.

The system that has developed around unpaid work is ludicrous. It's detrimental to the economy as a whole and the well-being of a whole lot of 20-30 somethings, and it's part and parcel of the reason that many Western countries have a massive glut of people over-educated for the positions in which they serve, swimming in debt (more a problem here in Canada and the US than the UK, I believe but still a problem).

In the same way that it is easier to sympathise with Roman Catholics in Northern Ireland (i'm not advocating the IRA's methods), they are treated as a minority in their own country.

Why did you continue to press your point when absolutely no one cared about what you were saying? I hope you're not like that in real life, for your own sake.
