I'm more than happy to stay at Bristol City, says skipper Sam Baldock.

STAR striker Sam Baldock has assured Bristol City fans he is happy to stay at the club and help the Robins chase promotion to the Championship next season.

The subject of an undisclosed bid from second-tier Brighton earlier this month, City's captain and leading goalscorer has been at the centre of media speculation since.

Although City's board of directors rejected the bid, Seagulls manager Sami Hyypia has cash to spend and Brighton are reported to still be in the market for strikers. But Baldock, pictured, who has a year to run on his Ashton Gate contract, refuses to allow uncertainty regarding his future to unsettle him.

He insists he has a good working relationship with Robins manager Steve Cotterill and is prepared to stay and play his football in League One next season.

In an interview conducted on the club's pre-season tour to Botswana, Baldock said: "To be honest, I don't let it concern me at all.

"The manager and I have quite a good relationship and we talk about it and he updates me on what is going on. He has told me he wants me to stay and I am more than happy to stay."

Cotterill has signed six players during the close season with more to come and Baldock believes City are assembling a squad capable of challenging at the top end of League One.

He added: "I think we have a fantastic squad here and I think we can really go places this year.

"I think they have done a really good job of identifying the better players in the league from last season and have managed to snap them up early on, which is good.

"We've let them settle into the group and we are looking strong. Obviously, we are taking nothing for granted, but you will go a long way to find a better squad than ours in the division."

Baldock scored twice upon his return from injury in City's 3-0 friendly victory over Botswana Premier League side Extension Gunners in the National Stadium in Gaborone on Monday, and the former MK Dons and West Ham marksman wants to pick up where he left-off last term.

"It is nice to keep on a scoring run and that is something every striker wants to do," said Baldock, who finished last season as League One's leading scorer with 24 goals.

"If I can get that confidence going before the start of the season, then all the better."

City return to action when they play the Botswana national team in Gaborone today. Karleigh Osborne is ruled out with a shin injury and Cotterill will await the outcome of fitness checks on Bobby Reid, Marlon Pack and new signing Luke Ayling before finalising his starting line-up.

It's great to hear him state that he is happy to stay but it is also very strange to read in the same article that he only has quite a good a good relationship with Cotts, maybe I'm reading something that isn't there but it makes me feel uneasy, being a City fan, I remember we've been there before..

I believe, Wizered, you are looking for something that is not there.
As captain, Sam, should have perhaps a closer relationship with SC than other players so nothing to imply differently?
