After last years end of season capitulation I vowed never to get excited about this team again.. BUT... !!! My daughter has said she wants to go to watch Newcastle this year and I am excited that she has bought into my madness. I gave up the ST at the start of last season, vowing to never again gift money to Mr. Ashley until hell froze over. However i am quite optimistic about this season with the signings we have made. Colback said that Pardew sold him the club with the promises of the type of players he wanted to sign and he says he has followed through on that promise! I know that the Sydney F.C. game was nothing to get worked up over but i liked the way the team set up and I liked the way the players performed. Help me..... I`m all confused.. Is it possible that we may have a decent season or is Pardew going to buy good players and then ruin their careers, as per usual???

I'm optimistic which is saying something. But, I don't like hearing reports that Pardew is planning to play Janmaat at centre back. He's a right back and that is his best position.

I'm cautiously optimistic for a better season.
All I ever want is to see a team have a real go in a game.
    Here's hoping the team deliver.

5 players away from being okay (since most the squad players have been axed)
And still no main forward bought = worrying times thus far as well as pardew still ensuring we will fail

    No you should not!

Because ma knows he is dealing with idiots including our manager. We've got rid of more than weve brought in and what we have brought in could be worse.

Secondly our strip looks like a supermarket sweep outfit

Last but not least I strongly suspect we will sell Krul or sissoko

Absolutely nothing to get excited about when Pardew remains manager at our club.

I'm a fan of Forster and apparently his price tag is £7.5m.
He's also British and a Geordie.
If Krul went for £10m+ and we got Forster in I'd not be too upset at all.

I'm optimistic but then I always am.
Set same target I have had for past few seasons.
Not relegated, certain that won't happen.
Top 10, almost certain that'll happen.

    8th, convinced that's where we'll finish.

Try and topple Everton (though they've improved massively) as the 7th best team.
Like to think we can have a go at that.

    Top 6, successful season.

    Top 4, brilliant.

I'm going to put it out there now that we'll finish on lower than 8th.

I'm still sceptical about the new season tbh. We've lost the mainstays of our team in Debuchy, Cabaye and Remy. Marvaux has gone on loan, Jonas is on his way, Shola not here and HBA sadly won't feature. I'm pleased with our signings, but Rivière won't be the same quality as Remy, we certainly need another striker and a centre half. Then I'll be happy. <ok>

We're a striker away from optimism in my view.

A striker and a CB away from delusion.

    I'm not back tracking.
My prediction of at least 8th goes hand in hand with fact I think we'll get a striker of some note before window closes

I really think it's time to stop going on about Cabaye, yes we know we need creativity in midfield but he left in January so enough please, Remy was never our player just a merc looking for his shop window, his last option has fallen for him in Liverpool, Marvaux was hit and more miss, Jonas has had his time and the harsh reality is that he is being shown the door, Shola has at last gone and I for one am quite happy that he has. HBA again enough has been said about him, he is marmite but not as profitable, Debuchy has been replaced with a full Dutch international who is younger and will prove himself over the coming season. full optimism will come if as has been stated we bring in another striker, there is still a few weeks to go yet and we will see how the new players bed in with the squad.

I'm with Luuk on this one. Nothing is guaranteed of course and as well as the top 7 who are a cut above us and (I think) too far ahead to catch up in one window, there are other teams looking to improve. We have no god-given right to finish high up, but last season we showed top 8 form consistently until new year. We sold Cabaye, but by not replacing him we also sold hope and morale. Kinnear was rightly sacked for that.

I believe we have the players now to repeat the form of the first half of last year and a slightly better depth of quality in the squad. I'm also hoping that not all of the sold/released squad players will need to be replaced by purchases as its about time that our development squad started to do some developing. I'd still like to see a quality goal-scorer arrive - and believe/hope one will. Anything else is a bonus.

However, I'm unapologetic for being more optimistic than I have been for a couple of seasons now.

This for me. Though I'm starting to get more sceptical with each passing day, as to whether we will actually sign a proven goal scorer.

CB I think is highly unlikely, unless MYM goes.

All that aside, I think there's enough reason for optimism. Definitely compared to the feeling of utter dejection at the end of last season.

I am not convinced as yet .. I think we have stood still, at best, the last 2 seasons and look like we will be in a similar position for the upcoming season .. and do not think the buzz around the new players is anything more than buzz.. the squad is no deeper, the quality is, near as dammit, the same, and we have 'basically' replaced like for like ( janmaat/cabella/Riviere/DeJong/ for debuch/cabs/Shola/HBA)

I do believe there would be room for cautious optimism with an additional quality striker and a solid, one for next year type CB ...plus a Grenier type of signing ( ie actual, real quality coming in over and above mere replacement of those that have left)

Another real failing is that Pardew is still here .. He has done nothing to prove he has the skills/insight/talent to be anything more than a championship journeyman manager at best .and that's the level we will always be dragged towards with him at the helm ..Any minor 'success' we have will be despite him, rather than because of him

Are we safe from relegation? ..Very likely

Are we going to compete? ...occasional PL games. Elsewhere ..not a chance (as its not cost effective which we all know is a key foundation philosophy of Football..cost effectiveness)

Are we stronger as a club today vs 2/3 yrs ago? ..not really

Is the fat controller richer?..Oh yep, significantly (strange how the never diminishing loan of MA is still there though, and the shabby, cheap, degrading use of the Newcastle 'brand/Image' to line his pockets and promote his exploitative, cheap as chips with quality to match, tat around the world ...Wonga and SD ..FFS!! If he ever goes it will take years to repair the damage)

In the words of Monsieur Rotten ..Ever feel you've been cheated? ..Yes I do, and its not a pleasant feeling

I don't know why any of the comments going on about the lack of replacement quality include Shola, any striker capable of 6 goals average or more a season is a quantum improvement on Shola even in his "Prime".

I think we're a striker and centre back away from optimism.

A striker, centre back and creative midfielder away from delusion.

If the rumours of the club's spending being at an end, then for me its not great. Year on year we get told of the promise of youth and it never comes to fruition. We were three players light in January, we've since moved on at least six who featured for the first team and brought in 5 plus Perez. There's still stacks of cash available yet we're going in to the new season with Williamson as 1st choice CB. I'm afraid anyone approaching this season with optimism has simply fallen victim to the illusion of ambition that has been created.
