Steven Gerrard has retired from international football: http://www.thefa.com/news/england/2014/jul/steven-gerrard-press-conference-200714
Good, his inability to effectively link defence to attack in the World Cup, a job that Carrick or Wilshere would have been far superior at, cost us against Italy and Uruguay. Time to move on.
Was that his role? I thought that was Henderson's role but that shows the inadequacies of Hodgson's tactics. We need a "Schneiderlin" type player to break up the play and move the ball away.
Great news for England and takes the pressure off Wroy to pick him again due to the intense media pressure claiming he is world class (never was in his prime and was a liability at the WC). Bring in the youngsters now and lets move on from the failures of the "Golden Years" That said Gerrard has been a faithful servant and has done his absolute best so many thanks go to him
Never was world class? Id have to disagree there. Sure he wasnt great all the time, but name a player that is? Take his performance in the champions league final against ac milan for example.
I'd tend to agree. For some reason though, world class players (or those who are there or there abouts) somehow fail to play in a world class manner when wearing an England shirt. Steven Gerrard being another example.
He's as faithful as a pet dog that you don't really like that much, but you don't have the heart to take it to the Blue Cross or leave it tied up in Tesco's carpark. Did he do his best? 114 caps and I'd say, at the very most, only around 20 performances of an adequate standard. Rest of the time, just cruised through games doing very little. Think the only other players he inspired were our rather gullible Mr Lallana & Lambert. Outside of the Liverpool player & media clique, I expect he wasn't that liked or respected.
Good club player but an average England player. It's the same with Lampard, great club player for Chelsea but didn't do much for England. I'm glad he has retired.
Well, this news has come two months too late. Gezza is a big sack of **** & should have been put out to pasture after Africa. No I'm not a fan of he.
Is he also responsible for the war in the Middle East? Can hardly lay the blame of years and years of England failure at his feet. Hodgson failed to get the best out of our players when he managed us at Liverpool so it's hardly surprising he's done the same whilst managing England. A new and inspiring manager is needed before England rebuild can truly begin.
Lampard scored 29 goals for England from midfield. How is that not doing much for England. Lampard & Gerrard are easy targets but in truth they are the best midfielders England have had in the last 10 years.
I mean, he has hardly been a world class player. Of course, this is my opinion only, and 'world class' is subjective, as many will judge it differently.
Lampard scored 29 goals for England _______________________________- 22 of those were against San Marino.
You can lay the blame of England failure at his feet when he's played poorly for England & as a Captain, has seemingly done sod all to lift his players. England will only be any good when they pick a team, not a media driven "legend of the week"
I heard Matt Le Tiss was retiring from internationals as well, they had the same chance of being picked again. Yes, I was wrong (again) by saying he should start at the World Cup. 20/20 hindsight, not that it would have fixed everything if he wasn't there.
I think we can argue about world class (or not!) but I think when they were at their peak they were the closest we've had. I think both, and particularly Gerrard has suffered in having to "carry" England in many tournaments. It would have been interesting to see either at their peak in Germany's team. Schweinsteiger is no better than Gerrard at his peak. England for some reason don't play as well collectively and whether it's tactics or something else, but we've consistently under performed for a long while now.
I was so accustomed with liverpool giving us so much money my first thought was don't you have to pay to use our section of the forum!!! my bad dude
I guess fans assessment of any of the current crop of England players ranges from useless to not performing on the big stage. The only good opinion seems to be reserved for those who haven't had a chance to disappoint yet. Gerrard is past his best, but produced some great football at his club which he was rarely able to transfer to the national side. But then that applies to most players in recent years.
