Sorry to burst ya thespianal bubble. Ya bigfattigerish lug. Film in its organic state is a combination of chemicals & materials combined to make the filmic stock. Known as Celluloid. A series of experiments, discoveries & techniques ,Using High Tech materials bring about a finished product in a purist form . This is Raw Film. This is called the Laboratory stage. The Budget allocation and Finance & Insurance Co's , determine how expensive & of the quality of the Celluloid. Production Codes must of been given the Green Light at this point , either Independantly or by a Studio. To purchase the Celluloid. Micheal Caine will be A researcher in to this subject at this stage as to the product the technicians will be using. And Michael may even own the Raw print b4 it's used in Pre-production. In this sense he's a businessman 1st b4 he's an Ac tor. The script is then ordered or written upon agreement , or bought , redifined , for Dramatic Representation . dependant on the story, That is business again , The author, production company, finance company, even Michael Caine may of used his own money
to purchase the rights making him a screen credit in adaptation of material that may be changed in writing , again a behind the scenes businessman deal . Next the cast is chosen in which Michael will have a vote as to offset his talent , His commercial handling of his own Image, & business interests. As He now has been in the Industry a while. Etc , Yes he will b onscreen and a lead character. Only in a central way to ensure the frames per second of the filmstock exposed and the Ratio of exposure from shooting Interiors, backgrounds , Etc, include him bcoz of his & the producers money involved in the purchase of the Film stock processes. Saturization , Colourization . Oxidisation for protection. Length Of Reel/s , Lenses , Filters , Etc ,He owns a Percentage of the film exposed to the light. Of course the other actors are going to conform. He is the Boss. It's His script , defining the other actors lines and actions as he needs them probably from being involved in the writing process. The Actors/ Actresses will do as their told , or their off the bloody picture. The lighting technicians & Sound engineers & set designers & costume fitters and editors & make up artists add the Illusion to a story and the producer and Director control all the film frames and action to minut proportions. In simple terms Michael Caine is made up to look good to an audience. He is in a physical presence very real in as much as he is over 6ft 4" & that a camera aperture has him filling a void of space because of his stature. Atmosphere is controlled , to give a sense of dramatic presence mainly for the distributors and future financers whom pay for the print , he is selling worldwide. And to any and all Future Products He may be Involved with. As his pictures DO make money. He needs to b centrally fixed in the film that is showcased beause he is an owner of the material he is selling. Its a BUSINESS. The fantasy is created by you the viewer as to how entertaining the business is.

di caprio is a great actor, various roles, gatsby was fantastic

i've never really rated brad pitt and those ilk, with the increase in technology in cinema, the actors can do less to be more 'powerful' on screen, i really rate bryan cranston

I'd put Tom Hanks in the great actor category. Dustin Hoffman also.

GG, it's obvious that you are far more concerned about the mechanics and science of cinema, rather than it's primary function of entertaining and engaging it's audience.

All of the garbage you just declared, in the context of this thread, is totally and utterly irrelevant. If it made you feel better making us aware that you know (or claim to know) ****loads about Michael Caine and how he interacts with an entire film crew.....then that's just fine :)

Caine is an accomplished, highly thought of and Oscar winning actor. Whether he gets blown by the executive floor running boom grip and insists on eating woodpecker kidney soup in his winnebago means naff all sunshine.

There are any number of things that contribute making a 'great' actor.
In Robert Mitchum's case, when given the script, he would look at the first page, crumple it up and throw it away and then do the same with any others. He had a photographic memory. Spencer Tracy had the gift of covering all emotions from a-z. Many actors have said that James Cagney was the best of them all yet he is mainly remembered for his Gangster portrayals rather than the 'Song-and-Dance' man that earned him an Oscar. Dustin Hoffman, when playing opposite Sir Lawrence Olivier, came on set unshaven and he hadn't slept for 3 days. Sir Lawrence asked him where he had been and Dustin replied "It's called 'method', where I get into the part I am playing". Sir Lawrence replied "You should try 'acting' - it's much easier". John Wayne was 'John Wayne' regardless of any part he played. Peter O'Toole was (for me) a very great actor who was convincing in any role he played. Michael Caine was 'Michael Caine' and spoke the same in every film he acted in - critics say that if you speak the words "My Cocaine" it sounds exactly like Michael pronouncing his own name.
