£10 million I saw, seems reasonable to me with how much more inflated transfer prices are this summer

Seems like UK tax to me. Reckon better can be done in his position.

I guess he is young and can improve, like Moreno. Hopefully we can get a left back too!

I think Ben Davies is a great player, £10m is a good deal for Spurs.

Yes it has - though less sure about the word big. I was one but honestly don't get why optimism makes people so tetchy. I'm not going to get disappointed if my expectations are not met so long as I see entertaining football.

My spin on the current situation is that last season was fantastic entertainment to a point. The high pressing and high possession rate was not something we have seen from saints and it was a joy to watch. But in the end I got greedy and wanted to see more end product (goals) for all that work.

If you finish 8th though, and everyone else is strengthening, then you're unlikely to get higher with exactly the same squad. And to rebuild you need to sell so you have the money to reinvest. The last factor to consider is that our new manager has already spotted a flaw in our approach last season and he needs players who he knows will cope with his style of football. Obviously it's hard to predict what that will be but the early signs are that he wants more goals (using strikers / midfielders with proven scoring ability) and it looks like he wants to engage traditional wingers as an option.

The three that we sold gave us the transfer kitty we needed. And Lovren burnt his bridges so even if they persuaded him to stay, few fans would have been happy. So I have no real problem with activity to date. Quite excited about the new season TBH.

Yes but to progress higher than you finish you also don't sell your best players. With the financials we have published over the alst couple of seasons we were in a position where we could strengthen the squad without having to sell the prize assets. The chances of us replacing 4 possibly 5 CL quality players is slim to none. You also are forgetting the age (Lambert aside) of the players, I think most of them would have got better next season and even with the exact same squad plus a replacement for Guly, Jos and Dani we would have had a decent chance of finishing higher than 8th as the players were that extra year older.

We didn't have to sell the prize assets. Bigger teams came in with massive wages and playing at a higher level. They wanted to go. all the pie in the sky Cortese fantasies in the world wouldn't have changed that.

I agree with that, was just highlighting mowgli's point that we sold to fund improvement which I disagree with.

This is what I don't get... progress where exactly? The resources and pulling power the clubs above us have, and I include Everton in that, are bigger. Even if we kept the players we sold, and bought three key players for around £30m again, would we definitely have finished higher this season?

Plus, I'm not sure 30m would get you that much this summer.

Southampton are bidding to sign Manchester City striker John Guidetti this summer to fill the void left by Rickie Lambert, who made a £4 million move to Premier League runners up Liverpool.
Ronald Koeman knows Guidetti well from his time in charge of Feyenoord, as the young Swede scored 20 goals in just 23 games for his side. It is not known whether Southampton would seek a loan or a permanent transfer, but Guidetti is expected to cost £6 million, which should be no problem for the Saints who have banked plenty in player sales this summer.
Guidetti was signed for Manchester City by former boss Sven Goran Eriksson, however the wealth of talent Manchester City have signed to play up front since then has meant that Guidetti has yet to play for the Premier League champions.
He was offered the opportunity to start up front for the team in Manchester City’s friendly match against Dundee recently, but when the action starts for real World Cup stars Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko will be back in the City side.
With Stevan Jovetic and Alvaro Negredo also ahead of the Swede in the pecking order, chances to make a first appearance in the Premier League for the Sky Blues look slim again for Guidetti, and a move to Southampton, whether permanent or on loan could appeal to the player

Guidetti and Pelle? Koeman not being particularly adventurous with those.

People are getting picklie all of a sudden. If Koeman is happy, I'll be happy. It's Ron who has to make them a team.

Not definitely no, but I think we would have a better chance of finishing higher than by selling 4/5 of our better players and re investing the cash in new players. I personally think 7th is basically our ceiling as it stands atm, could see us overtaking someone like Everton or one of the big clubs if they underperform for a season, but it is highly unlikely we will ever regularly be challenging/in the top 6.

I'd like Guidetti. Like Pelle, Guidetti found the form of his career thus far under Koeman, yet he has the benefit of being much younger and cheaper. From what i've seen of him and read on forums he's capable of moments of brilliance, for which he was likened to Ibrahimovic as a youngster. Should be relatively cheap too.

So i was reading a bit about Tadić and Pelle from various sources and I'm starting to get excited about the duo.

Tadić was cut above everyone else in the Eredivisie last season, part of the team of the season by goal.com and the best player in the league by BeNeFoot portal. He scored 16 goals (4th scorer in the league) and assisted 14 times (1st), while creating 133 goalscoring opportunities for his teammates, more than any other player in Europe. Playing for Groningen, in his first season he had 21 assists, with a big man striker Tim Matavz on the recieving end of his assists.
Pelle is a similar striker, but all I have read about him suggests he's more of a 'Lambert' type than a 'Carroll' type of striker. Sure, he's a big, strong lad, but he also understands the game, links up well, and he also creates chanches for his teamates, similar to Lambert - Pelle created 57 chances last season, as well as scoring 23 goals. Him and Tadić could make a deadly duo, Tadić on the left cutting inside on his stronger foot (scored 14 goals with his left foot, more than any player in Europe) or beating his man and crossing the ball for Pelle to head it home.
