Triggered some memories there, Spent loads of time in Greenwood library, school days in the 70's and on the dole early 80's
Proper books only, bought and paid for, the book writter has to make some money or in the future no one will bother to write them.
I was about to get into the whole Audible thing but I didn't realise how expensive they are! Amazon offer a Netflix like subscription for them now though at £9.99 per month.
Norff hull or ope? I love it going there brings back memories of been taken as a kid and now I take my kids.
Yeah this has reminded me of going to Central Library on the number 20 bus from top of Goddard Ave when I was about 10. Took out C.S Lewis's Narnia books, one a week then moved onto Biggles then Isaac Asimov.
Nice to see we're such a cultured bunch on here! Book at home, kindle in handbag at all times to fill any spare time. Currently reading A Race for Madmen about the tour de france which is excellent, about to start Game of Thrones to stop everyone telling me to read it.
I have the full GoT series but also watched the TV show. I can't get into the first book due to knowing whats happened. I might start on the next book for the bit I haven't seen.
Not watched it but i'll generally read anything so should be fine. I try to put this down to being openminded but it's actually just boredom usually.
Read the book I posted on the first page mate, it's very good, the author must be some right twisted ****pot. It's sort of similar to GoT, except rather than factions plotting for the throne, it's about an assassin and his 11 year old apprentice (yes, 11 year old).
Watched game of thrones. Like i said, this is the first book I've read in at least 15 years, it was talking about GoT when my mate mentioned this book and said it puts it to shame in terms of graphic content. So I bought it the other day when I was bored and ain't looked back.
How far through are you? A good way? I'm definitely going to check it out when I'm looking for a new book!
I tend to go through reading phases and haven't read anything for a while but would recommend "Hebridean Sharker" by Tex Geddes. It got its second print a couple of years ago and as I'd been told about this book as a young lad,and it sounded great,I had to have it.It's not the most literary of books, written as it was by an ex-soldier but the down-to-earth truthfulness of the Basking Shark fishing industry,as well as other exploits,in the post war era makes for great"boys own"style reading.I should warn that it is not for those who may be appalled at the cruelty that was commonplace at the time(there are sections of this book Mr. Hat should really enjoy and most on not606 won't have a problem)but it also makes for compelling reading and was written at a time when the general populaces understanding of nature and it's conservation was only just starting to change. George aaR aaR Martins GoT may be good(enjoy the TV series)but having read all the Icelandic sagas I can't see myself ploughing through seven Hollywood style variations on the same theme. Not saying he ripped them off at all,but it's just a bit too similar at times. Paper v Kindle...Hopefully most of you may never know what it's like to not have a plug socket.Paper every time for me.
see, that would just annoy the hell out of me. i'd avoid that book on principle. americans are rubbish at dates. it was 22.11.1963 or 1963.11.22. their version just shows sloppy thinking. how can you sort a date when it's in a stupid order like that? they have no idea at all.
In my case i would say a writer would get more income from what i get on Kindle. I probably wouldn't have read most of what i have, had it not being through kindle and Amazon. With many books being about £2-3 on there i tend to just get another as soon as i finish one book (every 2 weeks i would guess), and just get what takes my eye at the time or is in my wish list if i have found a few to go at. If i was buying paper books i probably wouldn't have bought them.
Just finished vol.1 of Mark Lewisohn's biog of the Beatles. Now on Beefheart biog by Mike Barnes and an American thriller by Richard Price (Samaritan). Paused the Beefheart book to rapidly read through On the Bus (Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters). Bought the full run of Camilleris's Inspector Montalbano books to go at next.....
The Millenium Triolgy which I find better than watching the film version, Stieg Larsson's death deprived the Lisbeth Salander franchise of more stories, pitty. As for book or Kindle I do both library and the many charity shops that are dotted around the city and download the many freebies from Amazon the next Kindle book I have to read is an autobiography by Berry Gordy, looking forward to that.
I have just finished Two Brothers by Ben Elton.got it for two Christmas couldn't manage it as it was two bulky.Downloaded it onto ipad to finish it.Eeny Meeny by M J Alridge was a good first novel.
