I usually do one of these every year, bit late this year cos of the World Cup. Anyway what are you all reading at the moment? Any good recommendations?? Since last years I've read the Emperor series by Conn Igguldon, which was really good and the Conqueror series also by him, which was bloody brilliant. Boys own adventure stuff. Recommend both series. Im just about to start a Stephen Hunter book, Dead Zero, another Bob Lee Swagger story.
Currently reading 11.22.63 by Stephen King at the minute. I'm not far enough in to pass full judgement yet, enjoying it so far though.
I'm not much into books, in fact I've not read a book since primary school, but I've just started reading a trilogy called night angel by Brent weeks. Was chatting to some pals t'other weekend about telly and films, and he said this book made game of thrones look like Pokemon. He wasn't wrong either, so far as I've got with it it's very, very dark. And I'm well and truly gripped.
Currently David Copperfield, a Springsteen biography and Last Trains ( a very dull book about the Breeching cuts). To come; Wild Abandon by Joe Dunthorne, One Summer, America 1927 by Bill Bryson and The Rachel Papers.
A question for all you big readers.............Kindle or proper book? My missus never puts the Kindle down, it keeps her quiet for ages
I think it depends on the situation. I enjoy a good book whilst at home/on holiday/at the library. But I enjoy the kindle versions on buses/trains/short breaks etc due to the ease.
The feel of paper is something I hate, don't know why I just hate it. I'm not a big reader as posted above, far from it, but I'm reading that book on the ipad. Only cost £3.99 and all, bargain.
Proper book for me mate. Greenwood library always. Tradition innit. There's nowt like a book. Libraries are going the way of the dodo, they'll be extinct soon. The opening times they are operating at now mean they're hardly open. It's a tragedy
Paper book every time and twice on Sundays. Gives you a physical connection to the book that I don't think you can get with a Kindle.
its about the feel of a real book, the texture, that old smell, it feels closer to you I could never get into a boom on a kindle
It also feels horrible and does your head in when your thumb slips. It also means you need a light on and your partner whinges like fook when you're trying to read in bed. You also can't just click on a word you've never seen and get a definition and how to pronounce it. They also cost more. Ipad every day, no contest.
Our lass sometimes has that ****ing annoying American voice reading the thing aswell. Some of the pronunciaton is terrible and the voice is monotone...the Kindle not our lass.
Horses for courses I guess. I can't read in bed as I fall asleep almost immediately. Reading a real book maybe goes back to when we were read to at bedtime by our parents. Not quite the same I imagine with an Ipad/Kindle.
I am currently in the middle of reading all of Scott Mariani books, and found every one excellent so far, being a cross between Mcnab / Ryan type with a bit of Dan Brown, mixed in. I have read all the Excellent John Lyman - Gods lions series, Dan Brown type again (I like that type of book). As far as the kindle/book argument goes I am definitely kindle (though for kindle read IPad mini). Mostly books are cheaper on kindle than the paperback version, and I probably wouldn't read a quarter of what I do if I didn't use kindle.
I don't know, I don't quite get the whole emotional attachment to a bit of paper, the content inside is exactly the same. The ipad is just so more convenient in every way, it's a no brainer for me. You can even change fonts, background colours, text colours, everything, so you could make it look like a real book if you really wanted.
Depends on the attachment you had with books as a child maybe. It's maybe the same content but the experience I find is different. Don't know why but it is.
