Anyway, the issue as raised a decent debate for once, something that is often missing from these boards. I'm off to bed now, catch ya all laters
The quote I replied to is an oxymoron for a start off. ...and you were clearly giving significance to the stat, but carry on back peddling.....
Hopefully. Last season was his first full season for us, but he scored 11 in 16 in the half season before. Yes, it's great if you have a striker with a high conversion rate, but if he's in a team that creates few chances for him, then he still won't score too many. It's about a team, not a collection of individuals. The team created a lot of chances, and he potted quite a few. Of course, that team had Suarez in it, and now it doesn't- so for me the real question is can the team find another way of creating a large number of chances? My only real beef with Danny is that his desire for glory often leads him to make the wrong decisions- to go for goal when there's a better option. That is the main area where there's room for significant improvement imo. 35 in 49 ain't bad.
Sanchez was the perfect replacement for Suarez imo. The issue for Sturridge this season is that Goofy created space for both him and Sterling to play in, as he was the focus for the opposition. Now he's gone Sturridge is going to be easier to pick up and potentially mark out of the game. Sturridge is going to have to adapt his game accordingly
Pretty sure we prefixed the whole conversation about conversion rate with the point about shot selection but there we go. The stat still has value, as it shows how many shots a striker is likely to waste (therefore squandering chances in the attacking third) before scoring.
I think (hope) he can "evolve" into that sort of player, be less static, instead of him being man marked, I would hope Rodgers is developing him to start taking Defenders where they don't want to go, in turn he (like Suarez did for him) can create for likes of Sterling, Ford, Lalana and Markovic space to do damage in... time will tell I guess
Do we still need to buy "the chaser" , the forward that does the type of terrier closing down of defenders that Suarez did. It seemed a pretty important part of BR's expectations. I can't see Sturridge doing it at the same level...
I think Sterling could be adapted to play that. He's very tenacious and has good movement. I also think he could be a second striker in the diamond if we see that next season. That way you can have a fluid 4-3-3 and 4-4-2 diamond from the same starting 11. Lallana or Marko moves over from the left to make the tip of the diamond and Sterling comes off the right and goes up top with Sturridge.
Conversion rate is important as you'd obviously want your striker to put away as many chances as they can, but like all stats don't tell the whole picture. You need a breakdown of conversion of 'great' chances, one you'd expect a striker to score. This should be high, 50 or even 75% for example. Then a breakdown of ones they've created themselves or from outside the box etc. At what point in the game where they? Someone could only seem to score their chances when were 3-0 up and the games won and have a better rate than someone that has a worse rate, but scores more in games which are tighter and end up being the winning goal. Suarez was 17% I think someone put and you could say it doesn't matter as it only matters he got 31 goals. Well sorry that's bollocks. If his conversion rate for 'great' chances is only 20% then he's missing a lot which could make the difference in those games we drew/lost.
Busy sticking coke up his nose and ****ing whores - which means a straight swap would be quite appropriate
For me goals to game ratio is the one that counts and Sturridge's record for us is sublime. You can't pin all that on Suarez being on the pitch, just like you can't say Torres wern't all that because it was all down to Gerrard (which no one did, we all jizzed over him). You play with who you play with and make the best of it.
I meant before those comments. The conversation started about Studge because we were discussing Bony vs Remy and I said I didn't think Remy was much better than Studge, hence the Studge discussion/debate kicking off. Biscan gets it Goals to games is all that matters if you are focusing on the team. We were discussing the credentials of the individual (originally compared to Remy) where I it should be their all round game IMO
Fair enough, it can't be done with stats as you pointed out earlier. e.g. if you keep putting chances on a plate for some gimp to keep spooning them you get zero assists. Has to come down to personal perception and I think he offers a lot and scores many goals to boot.

I guess it depends on if we are interested or not. Plus, he might prefer the idea of Italy over England (culture, whether, etc)
