I'd say his record is outstanding at finding the right man at the right time. Coyle didn't work out, but in fairness it did look a solid appointment at the time, but that one aside, some cracking pics. I did genuinelly dislike Whelan until I read his story, and that turned me a little in his favour, one thing he needs credit for is the 'Roy of the Owners' kinda thing he did, bringing that tiny little club to the Premier League, putting them in a half decent satdium etc. Has a charirman/owner ever taken a club so far in England? All the way from rock bottom to Europe? Fair play to the fella.
Think they needed Coyle to be in for a bit, after Martinez leaving they may have shunned Rosler, but having had Coyle in between, obviously Rosler was welcomed with open arms. As for the bit in bold, Al Fayed at Fulham done similar although it's not a massive achievement really, Joe Kinnear's done it 3 times

Joke of a deal that was mate. I don't think they'll get straight back up personally, I think Forest, Wigan & Derby will be the ones to watch. Fulham won't be miles off, Bournemouth could be interesting & Wolves, I'll bet they are close to play-offs.
Didn't Forest just sell their best player? Might be wrong mind. Derby for me, McLaren will have them in ship-shape and well oiled. Fancy Derby, Norwich and possibly Cardiff or Wigan for the 3rd spot.
I think Forest's been coming for years mate, they are well run and managed now, and they have a cracking youth setup, I think this will be there year. Derby, they deserve it, I watched them a load last season and the way they play, the way they are set up, the adaptibility, they were excellent, head and shoulders above QPR, even in the final, how they lost I'll never known. McLaren has restored his reputation to a point that if Gus were to go, he'd be one of my first choice picks, with no hesitation. Not to underestimate the fantastic groundwork Nigel Clough did of course, he just hit a ceiling and sometimes there's nowt can be done on that score. Wigan, definite, Cardiff, we'll see who remains but Ole didn't look to have the ideas for me, and it's a very competitive league. Norwich could be strong, but they could just as easily be at the other end, on the fence with them. Leicester always looked stand out last season, I don't think anyone will be, I really think Boro will be decent as well.
Steve was never a bad manager. You are on to a hiding for nothing with England. He won silverware with boro and auefa cup final with them too ffs.
Aye, but there were things he did, acts, that tarnished him a wee bit, all forgotten now. You have to respect what he's done, man is a fantastic coach, if not ideal media fodder. Like I say, he'd be close to my first choice if we were looking, unless Conte fancied Wearside...
Fergie rates McLaren as the best coach he's ever seen, that's enough for me man. He's not a likeable or an interesting guy, but I bet he'd run rings round Mourinho on the training ground.
Don't doubt it. What he achieved with Boro & Twente was magnificent. He was always wrong for England, or the timing was at least, and Wolfsburg, well they are massively financially backed but a very tough team to manage, as they are seen almost as a 'works' team for VW and players and fans see them as a bit of a sideshow, same as Leverkusen & Hoffenheim. He's certainly a very good coach, and likely the best English 'coach' around, if not 'manager'.
Clubs have feared appointing him in their times of need due to his perceived underwhelmingness, like you say, what he did with a small team in a town like Boro who have no fans, surely he's got it in him to go one better with a team like West Brom, especially since they've a habit of appointing human sleeping pills as manager.
He dose lack personality & authority, and I think to be a really top manager you need both sides, you need that presence. You can't have a certain level of man looking after megastars, I think Moyes is a casing point of this. He just wasn't big enough for the job, you need a bit of Mourinho's 'arseholeness', Fergie's (and van Gaal's..) 'high and mightyness', you need that to really be a ****ing legend as a manager. Name me a shrinking violet who really bossed it at a top club, they all have a certain something about them, McLaren maybe lacks that, doesn't mean he can't be fantastic at a good sized club.
