We did the heating in there when I was an apprentice. The caretaker told us that they originally built it for "waifs, strays and bastards". During WW2, they housed Nazi's and Tally's in the attics, and the 'graffiti' was stunning, big swastikas and fascist symbolism. Ironically, my dad worked on the new deaf school and they closed that for pupils a few years after I worked there. Think they were talking about turning it into flats.
