Seen this on another site, and checked it out, bit flippin biased mind. http://www.sundaysun.co.uk/sport/mi...he-50-greatest-north-strikers-79310-28941116/
Was posted on our board as well. Agree with top two but the rest doesn't make sense. How can Kevin Philips be ahead of Keegan? Why is ****ing Carroll there and why is Hughie Gallacher not included? He scored 133 goals in 160 games...
Guess everyone will argue over this one...So many choices, where do you start.. Shearer had to be up there, sure most will agree with that
Well it's all so subjective....I would have had Cloughie higher than Macdonald, and where was Raich Carter (who was the last NE captain to lift the league title)? Gary Rowell was actually a midfielder. There is three for starters.
I don't understand the point of it being a 'post-war' list really. What does post war have to do with identifying the top 50 North strikers of all time? Surely the players before the war are just as deserving of consideration, but it seems not.
I didn't see that clause! Just got to the first few which were all Newcastle players, and realised quite quickly that it had been compiled by a Newcastle fan.
Even I would find it hard to deny Shearer is the number 1 post war striker in these here parts, although he will regret hugely (maybe only privately) that he blew the chance of a cabinet full of silverware to pursue the local lad came home image in the Autumn of his life. Would he have shone so brightly in a Man Utd shirt? Probably but he would only have been one star player amongst many other stars there and I dont think the mans massive personal ego could have coped with that. He exerted massive influence over all matters Sid James, including which players and managers came and went at the club, which he would never have had at Man Utd. Top striker yes but total big headed, self-opinionated ****er as a man.
It is frustrating to have the best striker wearing black and white stripes and not red and white ones for sure but it isnt difficult for me to admit he was a great striker. Its also very true that his ego took him to noocarsel as he has cashed in on his fame and name here ever since. He traded silverware for being the massive fish in a tiny pond.
Doubt that's true , if I had the choice now between playing for Man United and winning trophies and playing in front of plastic and quiet fans or playing in front of the team that I love and grew up watching as a kid I know which one I would choose. What's better than scoring over 200 goals for your hometown club , leading them out on numerous European nights and leading them out as club captain? Doesn't get much better than that , because it's priceless and no amount of trophies and medals can replace that.
I'm sorry buddy but that's pure sentimental clap-trap. When in his 50's he reflects back on his life and the likes of Shagger Giggs and Scoles are interviewed on their respective careers, outside NE1, Shearer will be forgotten. Had he won a hatful of trophies at noocarsel he would be remembered but only winners are truly remembered in life and Shearer wasnt one of them. At Man Utd, he could have had numerous titles, trophies and cup winners medals to add to a very healthy bank balance. No-one will ever convince me that for the very best players and he was one, Shearer wont reflect with a tinge of sadness hos career amounted to only 1 note worthy medal and a bar named after him? If it still is ion 20 years time that is? For lesser players that would still be success. For a top quality player like Shearer that's a tragedy he will regret.
Highly doubt that , if that was the case he could have left us half way through his Newcastle career. He will be remember for what I previously said and let's not forget he scored 206 goals and two third of them was whilst playing in very poor sides. I can't imagine the carnage he could have caused had he had Ronaldo en Giggs whipping in crosses for him. Anyways that's irrelevant now. You can have your own opinion on what you think is right , I agree that sentiment and loyalty is quickly losing its place in football but there are a few out there who put loyalty first. Roberton Martinez is a less drastic , but small example of it. And Shearer will never be forgotten for what he achieved as a player , trust me on that one You don't just forget the all time premier league leading goal scorer.
Can't see how shearer is number one - nothing biassed but cloughy has to be the best with a 90% scoring record this surely makes him the best striker?? I agree that Shearer will probably be mostly forgotten in 15-20 years due to his choice of playing for his boyhood heroes instead of the trophies - his choice but I wonder if Hindsight might have made a difference??
