Do you know what mate, I'm on the fence with everyone of our strikers. Not a nice, not enjoying it. Jozy's form proir to joining, Connors form towards the end of last season, and fletcher's finishing ability, all tell me it could click for one of them, but at the same time they've all shown glimpses that they could be overpriced and not going to be able to cut it. So depressing man. :(

If Conner won't sign for less than 42k a week it sorts that problem for me, tara for the right price or take the compo.

    Yeah.

We only need one, ideally 2, to hit ground running like.

I think that we must keep Wickham at all costs..get shot of Graham for certain and maybe Altidore, who can't score!

True, 1 of them has to hit form. If Giacc and AJ can chip in again and hopefully improve their tally this season that will help even more.

What's at all costs? Is he a 40kpw striker to you? 50? 60? The 'at all cost' attitude to wages in the past is a big reason we're in this mess imo.

I honestly think Giacc is gonna be the boyo, I love the fact that the poor season hasn't phazed him, he's missed World Cup, the lot, and he's still in there fighting.

    Top lad.

Model pro. I'm a big fan fella, glad he's been given the breathing space to adjust, the bloke loves a challenge and you can tell he wants to crack this league before he goes anywhere. Great attitude. Really looking forward to seeing him this season.

My "at all costs" comment mean that he is vital to the club, and his wage should be in line with the other senior players...he must be worth at least what Altidore gets, and then some!!!

    Aye.

His class is there to see, just needs to cope physically and he'll be a weapon. I reckon he'll be way stronger this year.

What if Altidore is overpaid. Pay Wickham more anyway?

So you'd overpay one player just because another one is overpaid? Sorry but I've seen nowt that tells me Wickham or Altidore is worth anywhere near 42kpw. Two wrongs don't make a right for me like.

Are you angry with me or something? Lot's of explanation marks. <confused>

I think with wickham's age he is worth a punt on those wages. When I've watched him, he has shown glimpses of being a star. He can score goals and he's a handful for defenders.

He got 5 goals in around 8 games at the end of the season. So he could easily be a 10 goal a season player. He scores that many and he's on a decent contract with us then his value would be high. He get's 15 a next season and the top clubs come looking. Say he only scores 5 next season he is still young and can improve. Say we cash in and he scores 5 for relegation rivals, are we happy. Say we got 5 mil for him. Now say he goes somewhere and he gets 10 goals I know I would be gutted. So for me he has the potential to get us 10 goals next season. He will have had a full pre season with Gus and I imagine confidence would be high. I say it's better to risk the wages as at his age he will have a resale value that would be better than what we would get for him now. I really think he will go on to play for England (obviously after he left us as we don't exist). Worth a gamble in my book.
People say he only did it at the end of the season but that was his first real run in the side! Maybe more youngsters should be given a run in the side also!!!!!!

would we be entitled to compensation given we bought the lad rather than develop him ourselves?

No one is angry with anybody on this matter..I am of the opinion that we should keep Connor Wickham, and pay him what the club feel that he is worth,on a longer-term contract. He is a young English centre-forward who may be worth a fortune in the next few years. He went out on-loan to get game-time,and,under Gus,has proved himself to be an asset to our club.

I think you have a point.

When you look at what the likes of Andy Carroll & Darren Bent fetched it appears that English strikers are worth investing in.

    http://www.dailystar.co.uk/sport/fo...ns-Sunderland-by-rejecting-new-contract-offer

Wickham, 21, was the Black Cats' saviour last season when his goals helped them to climb clear of relegation.

Boss Gus Poyet was keen to reward him with a lucrative new package.

But he has knocked back their offer and has entered the final 12 months of the four-year deal he signed following his £8m move from Ipswich in June 2011.

Sunderland are hoping Wickham, who netted five times in three games as Poyet's men staged a dramatic late escape last term, will change his mind.

Both Southampton and Leicester are monitoring the situation and are ready to swoop if the player sticks to his guns.
