Good to know management's plans to get us out of the Championship on well on track. Nego played second-half as RM. That should suit him better than RB. But then I thought the same about Evina and that didn't work out. Moses Ashikodi scored neared the end. Remember him? Welling would be his nineteenth club and he is only 27. Warning not to put all our eggs into the "academy" basket. He played for England all the way up to u-19s then his career fell apart through disciplinary and injury problems. How many boy-wonder u-18s go on to have a solid career in the first two tiers? One in twenty?
They are taking the piss. In the old days there was only one public pre-season game. First Team v Reserves. Nearly always "fixed" to be a draw. Five Shillings entry. My first look at the likes of Mike Bailey, Marvin Hinton and Billy Bonds. I wonder if we had their modern equivalent playing for us at Welling?
Interesting comments coming out of the game: A striker is due to join before Monday. Joe Gomez is Peeters number 1 defender.
This is great news IMHO. If the kid is good enough he's old enough...!! Besides... we're not exactly renowned for hanging onto our talented youngsters. So, I for one would rather see something of him in a Charlton shirt before Richard Murray gives him away.
I followed this off and on on CL. First half sounded dire. The second half team played better but Welling scored om the break to earn a deserved 2-0 win. Given we put out a different team in each half, not much to learn except we are a work in progress. I'm happy about a new striker, depending who, and we are signing better players than last summer. I don't set much store by friendlies, but I would' nt have paid 15 for this. This was for Big Bob to learn from, and the first lesson was, meet Simon Church. ;-)
I usually really look forward to this fixture, but couldn't muster any enthusiasm to go. Apart from that, I haven't received my season ticket yet, has anyone else? Anyway, I'm getting ready to move house, and am wrestling with the decision of whether to change my nom-de-plume.
No way man. You are Forest hillbilly, and even if you move to catford or billericay, stick byyour mom-de-plum.
I went and it was very poor, first half team were appalling but special mention goes to Church for a totally inept performance. Second half was better but Welling deserved their win. Team first half Phillips Wilson, Morro, Lennon, Wiggins Rhys Browne( a development signing from Norwich), Cousins, Munns, Holmes-Dennis, Church, Pigott. Team second half Pope Solly, Gomez, Bikey, Fox Nego, Buyens, Jackson, Harriott, Ansah, Vetokele.
We have no idea whether we are or not. And we won't get any real clue until the friendlies against Peterboro and Portsmouth. Or, since Bob doesn't have much time to cobble something together, until the first league matches. I am being charitable and disregarding the fiascos in Belgium and at Welling. Management hyping them up means nothing. According to them Parzyszek, Koc, Nego and Thuram were all great signings. Not to mention the chubby guy who reminded me of the bunny in the Duracell advert. Not the Duracell bunny, the other one whose battery always ran out before half-time. But I have a stronger qualification to your assertion. Last summer we had just come off a great run which had taken us from the lower reaches to finish three points off the play-offs. We looked just three players short of a team that would challenge strongly for the play-offs in 2013/14. In the event we added nothing of worth and the chance to progess was thrown away. This year we are coming off a narrow escape from relegation. From a poor team all last season we have lost Hamer, Devite, Stephens, Poyet, Button/Alnwick and Kermorgant, most of our better players. So we now need to add far more than three good players to progress up the table. I don't see any of our new signings being remotedly as good as the ones we lost. Even if three of them come good (which is a big ask) it would be nowhere near enough. More bad news is that there are questions marks over the fitness of Solly and Wiggins, among the few decent players left. Solly was "not risked" on the artificial pitch in Belgium. It is a long time since his injury. If he is not 100% by now you have to wonder if he ever will be again. Could be a Ledley King situation. Wiggins has never been the same after his injury. One would expect gradual return to form but no signs of it yet. I see no signs for optimism. Who have we actually got who are proven at this level, and no known fitness or attitude problems? Ideally you would want at least 16. I count: Wilson (average Championship standard) Morrison (average Championship standard) Cousins (average Championship standard but should improve) That's it. Three. There are questions marks over everyone else re: quality, consistency or fitness. Some may come good, some won't, but I cannot see us finding another 13 to make up a solid Championship squad safe from relegation.
Even worse news - if wiggins completes a certain amount of games a clause activates that a can leave for a underwhelming price.
Five bob back in the days of Bailey, Hinton and Bonds..? You must have been one of the posh boys sitting in the West Stand. I recall those matches but as far as I remember it was only 1/6 (7 pence to you youngsters) for nippers like me at the Floyd Road turnstiles and if you didn't have that you could bunk in over the wall at the Heights End (there was no Jimmy Seed stand there at that time). If all else failed, you could wait until half time when they opened the gate and you could just walk in for free. Later on we had pre-season friendlies against teams like Ostende and Nicosia and I recall that we did quite well in those games. £15 for the annual bunfight against Welling..? Blimey.
Total guess - but they were in trouble a couple years back financially. Maybe this is their spike in cash? If so, fair enough. We have always donated the gate to them for it.
I was there Farcical "game" really, in so much as we effectively played a couple of sides. Most of the squad got a good run out in very hot conditions. Plus points were that both Gomez and a refreshed Chris Solly looked good. Negatives were the amount of journeyman still hanging around our squad like a bad smell. Peeters really needs to start making some tough decision this week on a few of them. Has he the bollox to front RD?
