Pardew demands more leadership from United stars and appoints two new vice-captains

Siem de Jong and Cheick Tiote have been handed new roles in the dressing room by Toon boss Alan Pardew

Alan Pardew has revealed he wants leadership everywhere on the field next season.

And the Newcastle United manager has announced two official vice-captains to help him achieve it in Cheick Tiote and new boy Siem De Jong.

The Magpies will stick with Fabricio Coloccini as club captain and his role will not change.

Last season Newcastle badly lacked leaders during the club’s poor form in 2014 which resulted in seven losses out of eight in the Premier League run-in.

Now Pardew has moved to address that issue.

In De Jong he now has a former Ajax skipper who led the Dutch giants to a host of trophies during his stay in Amsterdam.

Pardew said over the weekend: “At Newcastle I have great faith in Fabricio Coloccini, but we have also just last week announced two official vice-captains in Cheick Tiote and Siem de Jong, who was captain at Ajax, giving us three players from different areas of the pitch to take that bit of extra responsibility.”

Coloccini was appointed captain in 2011 by Pardew after Kevin Nolan was sold to West Ham United.

His first season resulted in Newcastle finishing fifth but a lowly 16th finish and a patchy 2013/14 campaign - which was also hit by injury - resulted in some low points for the Argentine.

Pardew said: “Coloccini is a relatively quiet lad, who leads by example and presence and his calmness on the ball.

“The most vocal guy does not necessarily mean the best leader, although previously we had Kevin Nolan, who was very vocal in the dressing-room and a great organiser of the group.”

There will be plenty emphasis on Pardew’s tactics in the early part of the season.

And - speaking in the Independent on Sunday - Pardew feels the World Cup has suggested that the traditional use of the 4-4-2 formation is out of date.

He said: “There have been some interesting tactical variations, including the virtual demise of 4-4-2 with two strikers up the middle.”

Pardew also echoed the concerns of Louis van Gaal and called for the World Cup’s third/fourth place play-off to be scrapped.

His goalkeeper Tim Krul did not get a run out but there would have been an outcry had he picked up an injury.

That was the case for Daley Blind of Holland who picked up a knee injury.

Pardew said: “It was not surprising to hear the Dutch manager Louis van Gaal complaining about having to play a traditional third-place match instead of getting on a plane home.

“It is a needless game and you would have to be a real statto to name the team finishing third in the last few World Cups.

“Van Gaal’s only consolation was that, if anything, Brazil would have been looking forward to it even less.

“When you’ve had a bad defeat, that next match is always difficult and as a coach you’re just desperate to get the right response.

“The team are unlikely to come out flying, it’s a case of clawing your way back and all you hope for is a win.

“But that is in a match that really matters.

“All that the players in both squads last night would have been wanting was to get home to their family and have a holiday, while Van Gaal himself could have done with any sort of break before throwing himself into his next big job at Manchester United.

“It is not as if football teams at a major tournament here need to be fighting for a bronze medal.

“So let’s ditch the whole idea.”

Actually think it's a good move.
Tiote was immense when he led the team and seems to thrive on responsibility.
SDJ was Ajax captain so he must have the minerals too.

Of course we need more leadership within the players as we certainly do not have any from the alleged leaders of the club

We need leadership with a good manager with tactical ability and not a ****ing sycophantic spineless wretch.

What I like best about this article is that the penny may of dropped that 442 is outdated. We looked so much better when playing 4231/433

If we are going 4231 then Ba or Lukaku would get my vote ahead of Remy.
I'd still welcome Remy but he looked better out wide so think we need a target man up front

Obviously provided that target man didn't become an excuse to just hoof the ball

Most teams in Brazil play with one up top, not one team resorts to hoofball. First 6 matches will be interesting. Problem with Pardew is he panics and goes to 4-4-2 at the first sign of trouble. 4-2-3-1 is clearly right for us, we're just so badly in need of a CF it's unreal.

Hmm, it strikes me that there's something wrong if players have to be given titles for the team to have leadership. Why can't players just be leaders themselves rather than there having to be any kind of hierarchy within the team?

It's not exactly a new concept to have a captain and a vice captain(s). It's human nature to have a hierarchy. Personally, I think Pardew is adding vice captains to the mix because Coloccini isn't that strong a leader, or at least isn't vocal enough.

I know, every team has a vice captain

I'm just saying that if there is a problem with leadership amongst the players, giving 2 of them a shiny badge which says 'vice-captain' isn't going to solve it. Hopefully SDJ is a good leader (which all sources seem to suggest he is from his time at ajax) so that will help to fill the leadership void which has been left since Nolan left

I think SDJ will bring leadership, but it oftens takes a little while to show itself as Cabaye found. You need to settle into the league and new surroundings first.
