Media repots say BR will get the full £75m from Barca added to the £60m warchest he recieved for CL qualification. Sounds good. Here comes the but ... hes planning a 20m purchase of Wilifried Bony, 25m Dejan Lovren, 19m Divick Origi, 20m Lazar Markovic added to the purchases of Emre Can, Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert for a combined 39m Rumours also of a bid for Swansea gk Michel Vorm for 6m and left back Ben Davies. All I can say is ffs #spursofthenorthwest
Honestly gerrez I cant see this ending well. Bony , davies , lambert ffs. That kind of money could by any player 8n the world excluding messi and ronaldo. And we go chasing Southampton and swansea players
Nixon is a bell end though, as he's saying you'll sign Rodriguez (no not James) but the Southampton version complete with snapped cruciate
Yep, was saying similar the other day. Not one of the signings so far as been encouraged by CL footy, they would have joined anyway.
Agreed but ive seen the rest all linked by other "reporters" too Exactly , who out of that group has CL experience ? Emre Can and thats it. I dont want to be negative but I feel this season will be huge for brendan, he'll work miracles and we go close again or we'll do a spurs/united and he gets the chop for wasting so much money akin to Kenny/Commoli
How has the £6m or so we will pay for Origi suddenly become £19m I wouldn't take any notice of this **** at all
Arda Turan deal is back on http://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/media-watch/turkishfootball-com-reds-close-in-on-atletico-star
This time last year the fear was we would have no chance of making top 4 because we weren't buying and those we looked at were going to Chelsea or spurs because they were prepared to spend the money......Well in hindsight Spurs made mistakes in the transfer market. But was the mistake the physical act of spending all that money or buying to be seen to be buying to appease fans and not buying players to fit a very specific plan? There didn't appear to be one anyway. The money is irrelevant, if he bought 3 40 million pound players and did nothing with them or 6 20 million pound players and likewise failed it's the failure after spending that is the issue not the players names...... Barcelona bought "names" last year but it didn't stop them failing. Chelsea and arsenal made the "big" signing.....also failed in comps that matter. He'll be judged on what he does now. His squad, transfer budget he can't complain about and 3 years in to the three year plan. It's crunch time and I'm personally confident he'll be up to the task.
The only excuse I would add is that your 40 million player wants 200k wages, stadiums revenue not yet expanded and CL qualification, with the competition surrounding us would still be a risk even with those players and what happens if we're squeezed out of it next year? World class players on big wages unhappy to be in the Europa, our ffP screwed up and no money to add to the squad for the next year......and a new manager as the other still threw the money away and got sacked because of it?
Hurray. Somebody talks sense. Spending money doesn't necessary buy you success unless you have mega rich owners who can do it continually. It's all about style desire and ability. Spending £40 million on a player will guarantee you nothing
Frank, the lack of "names" isn't the only thing that's annoying everybody. Its also the fact that the likes of Bony, Origi, Lovren & Markovic were available for half of what we are looking to pay for them now, last summer. We are supposed to have a transfer committee in place to avoid s**t like this happening because of the fact we paid over the odds for Carroll, Downing etc but we are still doing bad business!! Why are the committee being paid if they can't identify players UNTIL they've had a good high profile season in a big league?
Not just the committee, but the scouts too. I genuinely feel like 90% of people on this board could have come up with the same targets as our board has done, simply by watching the other teams play. Scouts should be looking for the hidden talent and finding gems on the cheap, not established players whose name is plastered around the media. Worst is that now that they're known players, their price skyrockets.
I agree. I think he'll ultimately be judged on how his purchases this window perform in the coming season
I don't completely disagree but another point is how much money you are willing to gamble. For clubs with reasonable amounts of money like us, spending a bit more money is preferable to gambling on a player from a different league who might not adapt. And not just gambling the transfer money but the perfromance during the season. A few extra million means **** all if we get it all back from finishing higher in the league, going further in the cups, getting CL etc. For exmaple, LFC might consider Bony last year at £12m a gamble whereas getting him this year for his £20m release clause is more expensive but far far less of a gamble. We now KNOW what kind of a job he could do for us and the decision is just whether he fits our overall plan.
Most of these players are also international players so have experience of playing abroad and against European styles. I know it's different to CL somewhat but Bony, for example, scored twice this WC. That must count for something.
