Secondary school music related anecdotes, right...

In General Studies we watched the film Threads, I mentioned to the teacher that I had an LP that sampled it, she asked me to bring it in so we listened to Conflict's Ungovernable Force LP in the next lesson, well, about 15 minutes of it.

Got suspended for two weeks for being part of a band that entered the school music competition, we were supposed to play Crazy Little Thing Called Love by Queen but instead played Pull My Strings by the Dead Kennedys. Our singer had the whole of years 1 to 3 joining in on the chorus.

Crass used to sell hundreds of thousands of records with no radio or telly play, pretty big.

I'm not saying they never Stopme - just pointing out that some who were in the business at the time say thre's a certain amount of revisionist history as to how big the moveemnt was. I suspect your example was more standard for a fair few bands and the idea of the Sex Pistols being some behemoth to rival the Stones was nonsense.

They were selling enough records that they should have been high up in the Top 40 but for one reason or another they weren't in the Top 40 which fitted in with the BBC not playing their records on air. Imagine how many more they might have sold had they been on TOTP or the Radio 1 Chart Show. It does seem likely to me that the BBC/Record Industry "kept them down".

I went to see a singer at the Fringe a couple of years ago (can't remember her name) who specialised in Victorian songs full of double entendres. The Victorians were nowhere near as prudish as history would have us believe.

    Formby:

Watching on web about half hour behind, just did Leader of the Pack. My mum had a friend who couldn't listen to that one as she'd split with her boyfriend who went off on his motorbike and was killed in an accident.

Watching the next programme now: always liked Johnny Remember Me (due to The Meteors covering it), kind of strange seeing all the girlies around John Leyton, thinking "I would" but they're all about 80 now.
