My opinion is that he has a better football brain and is more adaptable to situations than Reid. Also seems to want to improve the side instead of hoping that they will simply be as good again next season. (Gus would also NEVER pick Gareth Hall!) He is not better so far but I think, if he has a few years, he will be.
The competition is much tougher now, there's also much more pressure on the managers to deliver with all the money. If Poyet got you to 7th it would be a much bigger achievement than when Reid did it in my opinion.
Poyet has spent less 12 months at our club. To make comparisons now would be far too early.. Let him sign his own players and after he has a couple full seasons behind him, he can he judged. Poyet made some obvious mistakes last year that nearly put us down: Persisted with an inexperienced Bridcutt, who's lack of strength, ability and premier league know how, was costing us. Loaned whickham to sheff wed, where he banged the goals in, whilst fielding the miss firing altidore. Fielded a poor side in the FA cup quarter final, after that game we couldn't seem to pick up a point, the players lost momentum and baring the miracle that happened, we should have gone down. But be also had his plus points: Eventually gave wickham a chance, was the last throw of the dice but it worked. Got us to our first cup final in many a year. Masterminded some great tactical games towards the end of the season, combined with the players new found confidence, it was a pleasure to watch. Encouraged the right football, and connected with our great fans. So some minuses for me, but some very big plus points too. Better than reidy yet? No chance, but has the potential and I hope he fulfills it at SAFC.
No idea - if I knew that then I'd be putting lottery on tonight with confidence instead of random hope! I think he is a very capable manager but, as Terry says, the competition and money flying around the game now is far far different to what it was when Reidy got us 7th. By that token, Bruce is better than Poyet as he got us 10th you nar!! I think Poyet will be a very good manager for a bigger (sadly) club than us in years to come. By the way - Pardew got Newcastle to 5th - I still wouldn't swap him for Poyet!
Reid had the benefit of having SKP and Quinny up front, will we ever have a 30 goal a season striker again?
He also had access to a red hot strike partnership, a partnership like that nowadays would either be picked off by bigger clubs or cost you around £60m on a good day. Poyet's got it in him, you can tell, and if Everton and Martinez can be up there there's no excuses for any other club. But just look how long it's took Everton.
I don;t think this is the case - only one player scored 30 last season in the PL and he has just gone to Barcelona for £75m - 21 was the next best and he coste £13m I think. We won't sign a 30 goal striker simply because of the economy - they are too bloody expensive and have bigger fish wanting to gobble them up. Fletcher is capable of 15-20 if his head is in the right place - how big is that IF - and who knows how many Wickham may be capable of as he has only had one run of games in 3 seasons.
Reid took Sunderland down when we deservedly lost to Wimbledon and also lost a play-off final with a very good team after scoring 4 goals. We went into the game with Lionel Perez who was obviously a liability. He should have got Sunderland into Europe but dropped out of the placings with a very poor run at the end. He then almost relegated us again when we only scored 28 goals in the entire season. He signed Tore André Flo, Lilian Laslandes, David Bellion, Sean Thornton and spent £3.75 million on Marcus Stewart to 'rebuild' the team. He was there 8 years and won nowt, as you've said more than once 'coming 2nd or 7th' means nowt.
Because we can't afford one. But, saying that, how much did SKP cost ? They are there, just as rare as hens teeth.
Too early to tell would be my answer, Poyet worked a miracle in keeping us up and getting us to Wembley yet it does not outstrip the two seventh places. If he can keep us around the top 10 in the next 2 seasons with another cup run then he would be better than Reid. If he manages another Premiership club after us then that would be more than Reid did too.
Poyet spent 4 million on scocco, 3 million on Bridcutt. Reid gave us the best football and strike force we've seen in years, plus our highest finish in many a year. So lets give Peter the respect and credit he deserves.
