I watched Mascherano versus Holland this week and was in awe of the player. It showed how one world class player can protect his back four while still being able to launch attacks quickly and accurately. Last year, our defence was way too leaky. But it can be argued that this is more due to the nature of our attacking play than the totally shambolic defending. Although when Toure played, the latter did happen! I personally would like to see a little more balance in the team. I don't care who we sign in defence, we'll still concede tons if we don't protect them more. This is especially more important now that we've lost our most potent edge up front and will not replace him (let's be honest, replacing Suarez is tough!). If Masch were avaialble at a realistic price with a realistic salary expectation, I'd snap him up.....but this thread isn't about that, it's about whether we need to strengthen in that Defensive Midfield area more and if we really need buy lots of defenders. Personally, I'd like to see Moreno in and another CB to replace Toure but that's it but I'd also definitely buy someone like Masch to protect them more and balance our team now that we don't have one of the best players in the world scoring for fun. Emre Can has operated in a defensive capacity before but am really not sure if he's a specialist like Masch, so would appreciate others view on whether he could do that role too.
Can can do that role - but it wouldn't be anywhere near as effective as Masch (the Holland game was probably the best I've ever seen him play, absolutely immense, quite possibly the best performance of the whole world cup). I'm hoping Can get's given a box to box role - but it sounds like he'll be our DM as Brod is on about resting Gerrard a lot more and all the rumours of Lucas going. We'll wait and see, but I have high hopes for this Can lad. Basscially do the Can Can. Also I believe Sakho will really show his worth this seaosn and become our number 1 CB. He was excellent in the WC and hopefully that confidence will come back to Liverpool.
I feel the answer is both. I don't feel skertl is the issue personally. he did excellent in my view attacking the ball and dominating aerially and wasn't given any credit. If thats lovern forthe long term i don't care. My view is this; 1. Mingolet might not be able to kick it accurately but he HAS GOT TO get off his line and allow a much higher consistent line and he's got to open his mouth. sweeper keepers are where it is at now. lads stuck to thier line as as anacronistic as keepers who couldn't handle the back pass 2. Shako needs to stay fit and prove himself 3. Johnson must be dropped if we do these 3 things our defensive 5 looks to be capable... without even a new lb. But we must also solidify the midfield which gives the both answer. If we send full backs way forward we simply cannot have the case that its only gerrard dropping in and not able to cover ground. We need to address this system issue.
Just seen this - Can playing against Utd. It seems he was played as a Box to Box, wearing the number 10 shirt. Take a decent corner, and seems to be able to spray a long ball around pretty well. yeah but utd were awful he looked ok but was not put udner a press type pressure in most of the shots but he seem to have team mates incapable of controlling it too. it'll be interesting to see his first games and how he lines up for us and the style he approaches things with. I like a player wanting to be on the ball and a midfielder who holds a good position.
think most on here would, would brendan though sadly. we seem to be linked to some strange transfers, or ones that you are like wtf! we must have some way to go though, as i'm guessing we are getting all our targets first then selling ones like reina,lucas,agger, skrtl,johnson,aspas etc. allen should be on the list as well but probably isnt sadly, or if he is, what's his value lol 5 mill. hoping a lot of our alleged targets are smoke screen (ie bollocks) and we are doing things quietly behind closed doors.
i think most feel allen just isn't physically where the game is at. he can work as hard as he wants but there'll always be a guy 3 inches taller than him who'll boss him if his level drops just a tiny bit. our issue is we overpaid for him too.
Yep. Agree with this. I don't think we can play both Allen and Couthino against top teams. Too lightweight by far. The Chav's just bullied us in the middle of the park at Anfield last year and that's where we lost the title imo.
