His first point stands though, One Direction are big for exactly the same reason The Beatles were, they filled a gap in the market that appealed to the most fanatic and marketable demographic.

Personally I listen to Absolute 80s - so I have little clue as to the current "standard" of the young person's listening habits.

Now onto One Direction (an act put together by the producers of X Factor because none of them were good enough to be in the solo male category - ie none of them had a strong enough vocal talent, as evidenced by Harry Styles singing out of tune live on Children In Need one year), they appeal to teenage girls and a certain group of teenage boys - who sit in their pink bedrooms, listening to What Makes You Beautiful and imagine that Niall is singing the lyrics to them in particular - and heaven help any woman linked romantically to said group, as the vile threats on twitter emerge to the poor dear. They along with Justin Bieber and Lady GaGa are is what is wrong with music at the moment.

    Against what?

This isn't a debate about who's best or more credible, its just been pointed out that many of the marketing, imaging and promotion aspects of One Direction are the same that were used to make The Beatles big.

I agree with that point but even there the Beatles where marketing it first into unknown territory at the time..i believe it was Astrid Kirchherr in Hamburg who came up with the mop top Hairstlyes 40plus years before the likes of Simon Cowell came along(with respect to Simon Cowell actually)..so to even put that aspect in the same bracket(music aside) is a complete non competition too

Completely agree, The Beatles pioneered how modern music is marketed, the likes of Simon Cowell are essentially taking what they did and making it relevant to the modern charts.

The Pop in Pop Music stands for popular and therefore the quality of said music is somewhat irrelevant. It's about what clicks with the music buying/streaming public of the time.

The qualify of music can be reflected upon and judged at a later date but it's about what ticks boxes in the here and now.

Every now and then an artist has success by bridging gaps between generations and musical tastes (recently Adele for example) but on the whole, hormones and music that relates to a peer group specific sub-culture will win out.

For the record, Hit Me Baby One More Time, What Makes you Beautiful, Poker Face might make your skin crawl but they are all undeniably brilliant pop songs.

No, but the album charts usually have good music in them. A lot of people talk about one directions new song, but a lot of people talk about the monkeys' new album if you get what i'm saying. Probably not, it sounded better in my head.

Hands up!..am a Beatles and good music(Doors,Rolling stones etc etc) fan hoping this new format on chart success would somehow benefit the charts by introducing some proper music into it...even chesney hawkes late on a saturday night via house party streams i thought would make the charts interesting....had good answers as to why not the case, thanks guys..but at least this new format makes Rage against the machine v X factor xmas no1 type political standpoints easier in future now we dont have to pay i guess at least! :)

ive always prefered to "find" my own music , OK i may have guilty pleasures - mostly pop from the 80s
i feel i was lucky to be massively into the whole HipHop Culture in its beginnings in the UK & House/rave scene in both of its infancies as the modern variants are quite sad in comparison .
Im sure the Kids of the 50s & 60s thought as much when listening to Progressive rock in the 70s .

At work when we play our own MP3s through the system , one lass says that she only likes music she knows .
and on her turns she plays Galaxy i think it is , it plays the same 20 songs through the night and even i can sing along now lol !!!

    on another note ,
Ive never owned a single Collins , Jackson , Madonna , SpiceGirls , Duran Duran album or single - yet i can probably sing word for word dozens of their tunes

I love Deezer, allows to to listen to new stuff as well as old stuff.

I can just as happily being singing along word for word with Killing Joke and Wardance, then the next minute the same with DNA by Little Mix. Good times.

Been ages since I bought anything new music wise for myself .

Last singles I bought was the single Montego bay by bobby bloom found
In a box in a charity shop and a single by Barrington Levi called 'Moonlight Lover.'

Last CDs I bought was even longer ago , Gregory Isaacs I think .

All my music is either Reggae or Ska.

I really don't know who the bands are that get mentioned on here.

PS.....I did take daughter to seen Greenday / Good Charlotte / Him / and Blink something or other .

She was to young to go on her own at the time.

I got my revenge by taking her to see Bad Manners.

    She was not amused...

    :)
