I was so knackered from watching football all the previous night - France/Germany (1.30am) and Colombia/Brazil (5.30am), probably not the smartest, having had a stent put in my heart 3 weeks ago - that I had to record the cycling and watched it at a more civilised time today. I commented to wife and daughter that it was more like watching a travel video than a cycling event and as some others on here have already said, it made me proud and was a great reminder for me and the missus of the wonderful time we had in Yorkshire (nearly 4 years ago now) and also of just how much there is to see. We spent nearly 2 months of our three month visit in Yorkshire and I reckon we would have to spend another 2 months there to feel we have seen it all - or nearly all of it!
Oh Cav I guess they thought even though there was no break, he realistically stood no chance of a win so what was the point? What now for OmegaPQ? Tony Martin will only have one chance to win a TT. Renshaw or Bakelants might sneak a win but they must feel like the world's ended.
Wake up call for London: there is sporting passion all over these isles, not just for the London Marathon and the London Olympics. People away from the capital are starved of big events.
What a great race that was, Froome did well and stay out of trouble and up there, but hat's of to Nibali, took the race by the scuff if it neck. Once again Yorkshire did the tour proud, and has taken the organisers by surprise,
This is good: Cambridge urged to "raise its game" for Tour de France by Yorkshire residents http://www.cambridge-news.co.uk/New...nce-by-Yorkshire-residents-20140704145259.htm
This seems nice like a nice advert for the region its in, although I must confess to never having seeing it before so not sure how much good it does those regions. I've watched bits of this one because of where it is, couldn't even tell you where else its been in past years. Honestly, can anyone explain the attraction of the cycling to me? From a spectator point of view that is. Spend hours waiting around. Cyclists whizz past within a 3 min window (if you're lucky). Spend hours waiting to leave. I surely must be missing something? Like I say, enjoy the views of Yorkshire, and thankfully theres more "local tourism footage" than there is actual cycling, and its obviously great this event is running through the regions it is but I don't get standing in the middle of the moors for hours, then spending hours to get away. This also demonstrates the attraction of a powerful brand as well. If it was just the Tour de North England (not affiliated with the TdF), no where near as many people would be watching.
From a spectator point of view it's no different to F1/horse racing/the marathon/etc etc etc. From a personal point of view, men with firm thighs wearing lycra, what's not to like. There will be a tour of Yorkshire next year. I expect there will be large crowds as they will be attracting some of the big names now hopefully. It will include Hull.
Sky 1 are running a series showing four presenters 'training' to ride the first leg from York to Harrogate. The first episode was a bit naff, but the second's a bit more interesting. They're making a bit of a drama of it in my view. The City centre racing is in Hull on Wednesday, which could get a few more looking in now if they promote it well. Fantastic work by the TdF Yourkshire people. It looked fantastic.
That is quite amazing, but I guess there are not many top sporting events you can get to see for free.
Having seen the Tour of Britain twice (& younger days milk race & 'skeltons - bread race') & local criterium in Beverley a few times ; le tour was 'different' , felt like I was at a major event ; (like Olympics?), & you know next time will be a long time ... I think it helped camping at a brewery's camp site in one of the 'spectator hubs with big screen' & beer tent (food & various merchandise etc) ; able to find a good pub to watch the football the night before. The 'tour bus' is both ridiculous & entertainment itself , we have nothing like it wih our national rides, the menagerie that follows the tour ( & before the charity riders) it all part of something if / when we do 'T Tour De Yorkshire' next year we should aspire to copy & enhance Most of the time watching cycling is yes boring to watch - I prefer the 1 hour highlights but being there , like think of your favourite game for a daft reason & your half way there You had to be there ...
