Two more greats of days past - Fausto Coppi & Gino Bartali:
Agreed, absolutely brilliant coverage. They reckon only 3% of tourists from outside the UK visit Yorkshire; I could see that changing when they see what we have going on. I would have preferred if they had included the Wolds to cover the East Riding but can understand why they chose the routes they did.
We've had it already.....
Yeah I agree, although it would have been nice to have it in East Yorkshire the organisers were spot on to plan the routes as they have.
Ah Beryl, way ahead of her years and an inspiration to female athletes all over. Saved up my paper round money in 1970 to buy a road bike at a time when it wasn't the done thing for females to play football or ride a road bike. We have come along way in the last 40 odd years.
Watching on tv.....makes you proud to be a Yorkshireman. There will be a tourist boom for the whole area and the organisers deserve a medal for making this happen. Viva le Yorkshire!!
I know it does not feature Hull as yet but watching it live makes me homesick, anyway a another couple of hours and Argentina v Belgium on at 2 am
It's a shame that 30+ years after Tommy Simpson died on the same climb, after taking Billy Whizz, which most did back then, that Lance and the little Pirate were still doing the same thing, albeit by different methods, to win a bike race. I despise Lance for what he did and other riders like Vino who never apologised properly for cheating. I felt sick when he won the olympic road race, he shouldn't have been allowed to compete. It's great now that we seem to be moving into an era where doping is a thing of the past, coincidentally as British cycling is doing so well or is it coincidence! Nice too to see some of the beautiful Yorkshire countryside and a brilliant turn out as well!
First sprint won and can I just say that Andre Greipels thighs are fooking mahoosive. Heard this on't radio 1 earlier, made me smile.
My husband's idol when he biked around the roads of Yorkshire was Billy Holmes, a Hull born Olympic cyclist who competed in Melbourne in 1956. Won silver before turning professional in the 60's.He is only a couple of years older than my husband.
