Add Denmark to those, too, - it´s not necessarily cyclists that are the problem, but how cycling is dealt with, in many countries.
Fully agree but we have to work with what we have got and as a generalisation there is not enough room between buildings for pavements, bus lanes, cycle lanes and roads. Pavements, roads and Public Transport are essentials which just leaves one thing for the chop.
Very rarely happens that the Giro winner also wins the Tour, max, and certainly far better riders than Quintana have tried and failed, won´t happen imo.
Quintana isn't racing for Movistar this year. It looks like a 3 horse race between Froome, Contador and Nibali although Valverde and Talansky could get podium. There is a thread on the cycling forum (bet you didn't know there was one of those on not 606) http://www.not606.com/showthread.php/267696-Tour-de-France-2014
Love cycling, love the TDF, love cars, (I'm an automotive journalist, so get paid to drive). Don't like people. Too much aggression from so many, whether they're on a bike, in a car or, perhaps the worst, pedestrians.
Well done England, you did the tour proud over the three days. Great day yesterday at Cambridge. please log in to view this image
froome is OUT after crashing 3 times in 2 days. i wonder if his bike handling confidence is shot after the crash in the dauphine
Ouch ! what a stage, Froome says goodbye With what looked lÃke a broken arm, And that was before he saw cobblestones Which might have done even more harm This makes the whole race more open still With Nibali and Contador, The two next in line to pick up the crown Amongst those outsiders galore.
Actually no confirmation yet of anything broken, which seems a bit strange, considering he made the decision to leave the race - Not really a reigning champion worthy, if it does prove to be the case.
We must wait and see But today could be A day when we know a bit more, Whether Nibali Or Alberto C Have now got what it takes to soar Although not Alps yet Today´s climbs should get The blood boiling just a wee bit, Especially the last Two will make them gasp And for some, they´ll both curse and spit.
I've never understood the cyclists v motorists thing since most of us have done both at some point. It may as well be an argument from people that breathe against those that eat. I think these groups share more common traits than differences. In fact it seems perfectly clear to me that all car drivers, cyclists and pedestrians are morons, apart from myself
In our Country it boils down to need. We are a small over populated Country with a road system laid out before cars were common place. In built up areas the roads have become congested and are not very wide to start with. Public transport cannot function if stuck in traffic so bus lanes have sprung up all over the place restricting the room available even more so that if you get stuck behind a cyclist you just have to crawl along until it is safe to overtake causing even more congestion. If you take a chance then you possibly hit the cyclist so they demand cycle lanes but there isn't enough room unless they put them on pavements and then pedestrians are put at risk. If you live in a rural area public transport is non existent so you need a car. You can't cycle 10 miles to do your weekly shop. Our country roads tend to be narrow and full of bends despite having no pavements so, again, traffic gets held up if a cyclist is on the road. My argument is that in the country you have to have a car. If you live in a City you have to have pavements, public transport and, possibly, a car as well. Nowhere do you have to have cycles, roller skates, pogo sticks or any other form of transport so why do we have to put up with the nuisance. The problem has got worse with the rise of the group of ' budding professional cyclists ' Where cycle lanes have been provided they won't use them because other cyclists or pedestrians get in their way so back they go on the road holding up the traffic. I have no doubt that the lycra clad hairy knee brigade will wish to respond.
In the UK there are 8 times the number of cars per km than Sweden. There is your problem, not cyclists or pogo sticks. 1950, I suggest you wind down your window and thank each cyclist you carefully pass for risking their lives in order to reduce the number of cars in front of you
Not quite as simple as that my friend. I suspect that in Sweden your public transport is far better than ours. In the UK it is non-existent outside of the towns and cities and not very good even there. That is the reason there are so many cars in the UK as to most people a car is an essential form of transport. I live on the outskirts of a village about 12 miles from Norwich ( one bus a day to Norwich at 0730hrs and one back at 1730hrs - brilliant!! ) and I would have to drive 7 miles to the nearest place with an hourly bus service to Norwich. Also bear in mind that ' public transport ' is not a public service. It is run by private companies for a profit - no profit no service. The road to Norwich is a typical English country road - fairly narrow with lots of bends. You can chug along at a steady 40/50 mph with free moving traffic until you come across the dreaded cyclist and then it is 10 or 15 cars in a slow moving, petrol guzzling stream waiting for a chance to overtake. As I said cars are essential but if you live in a built up area you can also walk or catch a bus. Nowhere, yet nowhere, is a cycle a necessity - in fact they are just a nuisance!!
