Isn't this racism?

The mayor of Nice has issued a decree banning 'the ostentatious display of foreign flags' during the World Cup.
(Mayors in France have much more power than in the UK)

I can't believe that an area so dependant on tourism should even think about doing this.

Not only that, it smacks of xenophobia at best and racism at worst.

I'll be watching the game in the 'Irish bar', in Nice, and am tempted to put up a German flag, as much as it would pain me.

I'd be interested to see how they'll police this and would happily get into an argument with the gendarmes.

"Get off my German flag you fascists!"

I know this is of no interest to most of you, just wanted a rant.

In a country that supposedly fought the Nazis for the right to freedom of speech/expression/etc I find this appalling.

isn't Nice a stronghold of Le Pen?

i was hoping for a France Algeria clash, but the Germans will do. just start shouting 'death to the french' in the bar and see what happens.

I don't think France is xenophobic -but personally I would wear a niqab a disguise just to keep incognito whilst hoisting the flag... so to speak <devil>

Still not as bad as complaints upheld in our country to the national flag being displayed at WC/Olympic etc.

    But bad all the same

When there is an event on I dont think I have ever seen a foreign flag around here, probably have but its never really registered but I can't recall one.

If I was over there I would get the England flag back up, if they say WTF just say you are supporting Hamilton Button in the British Grand Prix, then next weekend England in the Test versus India.

As for the op, not sure what it is, patriotism for France can't see racism in it at all.

Surely patriotism is flying your own flag and showing support.

Banning the flying of other countries flags isn't being patriotic.

This is a holiday destination and the home of thousands of German expats and workers .......... why should they be banned from flying their flag?

This is Europe after all and we're all supposed to be equal.

Over here we're excited to see people representing their nations! We're eager to learn about their culture! Of course their is a minority, but most Aussies accept & embrace multiculturalism.

It's World Cup year ffs and there are people from all over the world unable to be in Brazil to support their country.

It's not all that long since Nice had a German flag flying over it, they have short memories these people.
