From Italia 90 to the virus of SKY 1992 - within the space of 24 months, English football changed forever, despite the billions that has passed through the Premier League, English football for the National team has continued to decline.

The FA is a dinosaur, it has created a monster that is now completely out of control. People wonder why it continues to go so wrong, blaming individual players such as Gerrard and Rooney but that is just bias club loyalties placing untold pressure on England managers. Whereas the real problem is deep rooted in our game at the very top. It's like trying to ask Sepp Blatter of FIFA to step down, the monster goes from strength to strength on the pure greed, individual celebrity status, corruption and plastics.

Trouble is now the purist's are a dying breed, losing a battle to the modern game....then we wonder why England continue to do so badly.

Hate modern football.

Well said. I agree 100%. TV and the cash cow it throws at the game has completely ruined the spectacle for the ordinary fan many of whom cannot now afford to pay to watch their local team. Whilst the premiership is awash with money, most of the other clubs, full of history and passionate fans, wallow around scrapping and scraping to survive with more than a few going to the wall for the want of £50,000 or even less, Aldershot last season, being a prime example.

I listened to a radio talk-in towards the end of last season as the final half dozen or so games were played with relegation and promotion very much in the thoughts of fans. One such fan came on and announced himself as a lifelong Burnley fan. His club were having a really good season in the championship, but far from being elated, the opposite was the case. He stated that he was really worried and concerned that Burnley had a real chance of promotion to the premiership and that it was the last thing he wanted to happen, claiming that the clamour to stay there, should it happen, would result in his club overspending on players and that if and when relegation followed, the club would be left in a perilous financial situation as has happened to so many other clubs which have been down the same road.

Burnley subsequently were promoted and I would guess that the price increases they have imposed on their loyal fans in order to justify keeping hold of the holy grail will mean that many of those fans will no longer be able to afford to watch their beloved team.

My club, having been so heavily shafted by both the FA and FL, (Luton Town), have, after five long years in the wilderness, found its way back into the League. I have to say that the matches during that time I have watched have been eye opening, honest clubs, many part-time and struggling on a week to week basis to balance the books, have been a pleasure to watch. Whilst the skill factor was not as the premiership or championship, the effort and honesty was a joy to behold. We have a good set up at KR now, good enough IMO to go straight up to league one.

But like the Burnley fan I hope and pray we stay well clear of the premiership.

I do enjoy seeing world class payers playing against my team, and I want to see my team competing against the best, - alright, I know there were too many games last season where we didn't compete -, but in the dark days when we went down to league one, I saw some of the most honest football played and met some of the most honest fans I am likely to meet.
If only sky would do one and we could go back to how things used to be. When football was a sport and people enjoyed it, and not a business, where, unless your team is relying on some Arab sheik, or some Russian mafia mobster to bankroll you, you are not going to enjoy that many games.

After today I need to change my username. Feel free to post any (polite) suggestions on the “Time has come “thread on the Saints Board.
