Well we are more or less half way through the 2014 World Cup, and i personally have had some extended nights watching the games due to the time difference we have in this part of the world, but have enjoyed some really good open football from various teams, teams we least expected.
Last night i watched Nigeria then Algeria and i think that they were better prepared, better technically than England and wore their respective countries shirts with pride and passion. I personally think that players who are picked for England do not enjoy the challenge which is infront of them anymore, which the main one is the press, as they are waiting for them to put in a bad performance then its slaughter time
The English FA have a massive task to fix the England mess, here are afew points of what i think they should do to try to rectify a third rate team, who thinks they are better than what they are!!

Restricting foreign players per team, but how many is the question?

Get rid of agents who are sucking the last drops of money and life out of football clubs.

Have a wages cap in accordance to the level of football you play e.g. PL player but playing in the CL get more than just run of the mill PL player, this may create an incentive?

These are a few points i would like to be implimented, views and more constructive points welcome.

Actually, Einstein, you're wrong, and it pleases this Jock to correct someone who's wrongly correcting someone in his own native language. I think you'll find that england is singular, and therefore 'was' is correct. 'Were' would be appropriate if the term used was a plural - 'english people', or similar.

I was thinking the same last night, both teams who qualified from our group went out at the knock out stage, it shows how weak our group was. Who would have believed 8 years ago teams like Algeria and Chile would have progressed further than England. A sorry state of affairs and you compare players supposedly on £300k a week like Rooney and you have to scratch your head in amazement.

Our club teams are throwing sickening amounts of money into the game and it is being shared between very few.

That Mensa subscription is clearly worth every penny.
In the context the word was used in the OP heading England is a collective noun relating to the football team being in Brazil. England as a country the singular usage was not in Brazil.
Much though it must rankle English is your native language too.
    Bitter blues, gotta love em.
