Mods dont merge this with the Suarez thread please. One of the Sunday papers here in Eire had a piece about Luis and had quotes from some mental health professionals who have worked with people like Luis. Also had a quote relating to Luis' situation. It seems Luis suffrers from an irrational fear of losing everything he has and being forced to return to the slums of Montevideo if he doesnt win football matches. The bite on Bakkal, Ajax werent winning and Luis was having a poor game. Ivanovic bite Liverpool werent winning and Suarez had been quiet. Chiellini Uruguay werent winning and he had been well marshalled. Theres the handball v Ghana and the dives every now and then also. The tears v Palace after the 3-3. You will notice when Uruguay or Liverpool are winning none of the dark arts come from Luis just sublime footballing talent. Its no good saying " oh thats ******ed hes a millionaire etc." Because its an irrational fear he suffers from. It seems Steve Peters was having a positive affect on him last season but that fear raised its ugly head in Suarez's mind again this summer. Even if he goes to Barca they will need a shrink working with him fulltime to allay those fears or we will be reading about something similar in the future no matter how many times he says "it will never happen again"
The usuals will be all over this Hash calling you an apologist for an animal etc, get yer tin 'at on feller.
Hoping the mods will delete any **** comments and this can go on to wider mental health thread. I just found the Suarez piece interesting as I was tucking into my fry Sunday morning, and it kind of adds up. Even though he's (Suarez)totally wrong.
Mental health issues are no different than a broken leg or a disease. Still it has a stigma attached in society. Even a member of the Irish government mocked it recently in a session when referring to a TD. Pretty sad really when you think about it, people just call them mad because they have no clue tbh. The brain has breakdowns like any other part of the body, many think depression is not real
I honestly do think that Suarez does have mental health issues. Hope, whether with us or another team, he gets the help that he so desperately needs.
Think he'd have to be assessed but surely if his needs were that great, Peters being a medical professional (if qualified enough) first and foremost should have diagnosed his condition and recommended to the Uruguay FA that he needed that level of support at one of the highest pressure situations a player can go to? If not qualified enough, he should have referred him to an actual psychiatrist? Either way if he has a psychiatric condition that leads to violence against others should he be playing without treatment at all?
the biting is a symptom, not sure what his condition may be though. Barton no doubt got slapped around a bit and has real self control slash anger issues. Balotelli definitely suffers form persecution issues and fails to link his own behavior to judgements of him
Not sure I'd use the word 'symptom', perhaps 'manifestation'. But agree that Barton and Balotelli seem to have similar issues. Perhaps El Hadji Diouf, too? Bellamy?
#semantics #notgettingboggeddownin Many people it seems. Read an interesting philosophical piece on why people are republican or democrat a while back and how it relates to their environment growing up, as the environment you live in can switch on and off genes. Negotiate or fight responses. A stressful pregnancy can lead to giving birth to a republican apparently
It appears from the piece I was reading that hes prepared to lash out bite in this instance or cheat handball , dive when he feels so much pressure that he believes his very existence is under threat. That threat being if he cant win his teams games he will have his wonderful lifestyle snatched feom him.
Definitely something up alright Hash. The fame it's self can cause you problems. Look at kanye West ffs. Thinks he's bigger than Jesus. Suarez really does take losing badly
Semantics is part and parcel of biology and science writing, Sisu. A sign of a disease and a symptom are two different things depending on who reports on or records it. I was just pointing out my preference for the word 'manifestation' (or 'sign') over the more specific 'symptom'. I've found that academics will often, like the rest of us, argue over perceived differences of opinion, due to misreading/misunderstanding/poor writing, rather than actual differences. I once resolved a debate amongst some of my colleagues as both groups interpreted one sentence slightly differently in a research paper. Once the misunderstanding and terminology was agreed upon, both sides found they were agreeing with one another. People sometimes under-appreciate the fine gauze of language which both joins and separates us. Pedantry, though annoying, at times (I'm pedantic and I still get annoyed with that aspect of myself!), is useful in helping people find areas of agreement and dispute.
I suffer with severe anxiety based on irrational fears about my health. Extremely unpleasant. Just emerging from a recent bout currently. Hope I never end up there again.
OK taking me too literally and you have too much commitment to this subject for me to compete with that ^. 2 kids here and cooking dinner, no not cooking the kids in case you were wondering. I concede. More interesting is the follow up bit I added tbh, environmental effects on development, which is also on topic
Everyone is more likely to foul when losing. You don't give away penalties when you have the ball and are attacking all the time... you give them away when you're being bombarded (why we got so many this year). Losing teams frequently end up picking more cards. No surprise that his bites have been when losing... I doubt there is anything as complex as fearing to go back to the slums... seems like ridiculous psycho-babble... shrinks always try to paint patterns and causes where none exist just to justify their profession. Truth is probably more simple... he's stressed and stress and anxiety makes him act out in an irrational manner. As it does everyone to one degree or another.
