Could he be joining his dad ?

The club is disappointed to announce that Diego Poyet has indicated he will not be reporting for pre-season training at Charlton as he wishes to explore his options elsewhere.

Charlton had been in discussions with the 19-year-old’s representatives over an extension to his previous deal, which expires on July 1st, since early 2014 and offered substantially improved terms in an effort to retain the fan-favourite midfielder.

The club had been hopeful of a positive resolution which would have seen the teenager continue his football development in SE7, however Poyet has said he will not play for the Addicks again and is keen to find another club at the soonest opportunity.

The club will now look to ensure it receives the best possible amount of compensation from whichever team Poyet chooses to join next to recognise the time and effort spent honing the player’s skills during his time with the academy.

Poyet made his senior debut as a substitute in the 3-0 FA Cup third-round replay victory at Oxford United in January before going on to make 23 league and cup appearances last term.

He played an important role in helping the club retain its place in the Championship and his contribution was recognised by Addicks supporters, who voted him as their Player of the Year in May.

“We are extremely disappointed that Diego has turned down our offer for him to stay with us,” said Charlton Director Katrien Meire.

“We did all we could to persuade him to remain with the club where he has played from a very young age.

“Along with our fans, I enjoyed watching his progression last season and hoped we would continue to enjoy his development at The Valley for a while longer.

“Although disappointed, we will continue with our recruitment strategy for the 2014/15 season and do everything we can to ensure the Charlton squad is as strong as possible going into the match at Brentford on August 9th.”

He won player of the season so how he wasn't an automatic choice is beyond me Stu... The calibre of the teams going in for him. What fans say. What journalists say. What his managers have said.

    On that basis.

can't think of many decent father/son combos full stop, never mind premier league specific.

Cloughie, Redknapp (and nephew, rather than son).....

Bruce atm but yet to be proven.

The word `successful` narrows the field somewhat.

Gives me hope then with Diego/Gus.. Anything can be achieved under our boss! In saying that it'd be bloody hard having your blood in the team without creating unrest/favouritism?

How many times have you seen him play then Stu? To paraphrase - "On what basis"?

He's 19 - only a kid and unlikely to be brought in as a first choice every week.

He made his debut after xmas (3rd round of the FA cup) and played 23 games - Yeah truly only a bit part player considering Charlton only played about 25 times after xmas!

He is being monitored by the likes of City and Chelsea - yet you don;t think he's good enough for us? <cuckoo>
