West Germany needed a narrow victory and it also suited Austria as they would then both qualify ahead of little Algeria! It is the most disgraceful game in World Cup football history which even beats the Battle of Santiago in 1962! This match brought football into disrepute and even the Germans felt dirty afterwards!
That's the one, it brought a new rule to the WC Group stage where the two final games of the group have to be played at the same time!
Well I've read several different stories over the last few days talking about them playing the ball around for 90 minutes to play out a goal-less draw!
Just checked and it was 1-0 West Germany not that it really matters! I remember watching it at the time and the ITV commentator was fuming (I think it was the late Great Hugh Johns) who did the TV for that game!
I remember the kerfuffle it caused but I haven't a clue on the score, as I say, I've read 3 or 4 reports claiming it was 0 - 0 so I just believed them!
1982 was a great World Cup for upsets! I remember the now famous Northern Ireland Vs Spain match and Gerry Armstrong getting the winner! The best match of 1982 was Brazil Vs Italy and the Rossi Hat-Trick!
