It looks like we have a competitor in the race for Goodwillie, but who could it be? <double>.

Answer with yes/no next to the number (give a reasons if you want) <ok>.

    1. Is 2 million too much for an unproven striker in the championship?

    2. Is this the type of signing we should be making? (bad private life if reports are true)

    3. Could this money be better served elsewhere? we could buy 3 or 4 players for the price of 2 million.

    4. Are we "over-spending" like last year?

    5. Are we doing a M'Boro? I.E buying SPL players thinking there better than they actually are (the SPL made them look good) but ultimately failing in the championship.

    6. Will we be joining the SPL soon with all these (potential) Scottish signings? :emoticon-0102-bigsm.

    Thoughts? :emoticon-0103-cool:.

Deffo worth a punt at £2m, Great strength with a good eye for goal. He works hard and puts himself about, not the fastest but good movement all in all. Previous big time spl players Kris Boyd (great goal record but lazy, ask any rangers fan and they will tell you the same.) And Scott MacDonald (Strachans idea was to play his celtic style at boro and wanted as many old firm players as possible). Both players have attributes that would help in certain styles of play, Boydy was a better player at Forrest...As for Goodwillies personal life, the case was headline news up here in Jockland a few months ago and then dissapeared rather quickly and i am sure MM is quite well informed via agents and what nots as to the seriousness of the situation... and would be unlikely to commit to a player about to be found guilty for rape.

1 Yes but is £2 Million only paper talk
2 Think you answered that yourself, If reports are true
    3 See answer 1
4 Last year we spent very little in transfer fees
5 So far we have only bought 1 player
6 I think our English cousins would like that, but no chance.

These are My thoughts and are not the thoughts of any other living person :emoticon-0105-wink:

    Edit

And I'm not feeling well myself
    ;)

The answer to question #1 is another question...can we get another striker with this potential for £2 million?

#2 No! need to get rid of his baggage if we are to take him, we see the error of this haven't we?

#3 Certainly we need other players and if this is to the detriment of getting a good midfielder or 2 then yes, the money could by better spent in areas we know to be weak.
But I doubt it will affect those other signings, so it's a non question for me.

#4 Well we've only brought in 1 player so far and off-loaded some high wage earners, bit early to say

#5 We have had some excellent players from the SPL, It's whether the manager can get them settled in down here, 'Boros' not getting their players to perform overall might have had an effect on the individuals

#6 No, stop asking silly questions :emoticon-0116-evilg

What happened to innocent until proven ffs, do you honestly believe that the board would consider buying him without being 100% certain that the accusation is crap

Sorry Sussex - we won't be meeting them next season as I understand Goodwillie has said, the only way is up. <whistle> Whereas in Jackland's case, what goes up must come down. They'll get enough rogering from the opposition up there anyway..........<laugh>

I think he would be a good signing, some of the goals he scored for Dundee look good and he does have a natural talent for scoring. As for his personal life, I'm sure Mackay wouldn't sign him if his court case was in the middle of the season :1980_boogie_down:

BLUEBIRDS - I said on an earlier thread that I thought Malky would have as much trouble in convincing our Malaysian owners who are a very family-orientated nation, that we should sign Goodwillie as he would the player himself.

I don't think for one minute that with such a history, he wouldn't be subjected to the closest scrutiny prior to any contract being awarded.

You used the one word in you post that is really relevent in this case - "suspected". <ok>

Goodwillie will be signed imo, however as the payment is likely to be in instalments i would imagine the powers to be will have a clause in the contract wrt the Charge hanging over him. I can see a point in signing all these Sweaties as it will increase our fanbase, as there are loads who come to watch us now ! Who will we sign next. My odds are, Taylor 1/3 another Jock 1/4 bellers 1/2 a one cap England international 3/1

    1. Depends. Look at Maynard at Bristol. League One striker and they splashed just over £2million for him. He's always scoring goals.

    2. I believe moving to Cardiff would be a fresh start for him. We've signed players in the past who have had problems and we've sorted them out.

    3. If the reports are true and we have a lot to spend, £2million isn't too much. And if you look at it, we've signed Conway for nothing, and possibly Earnie and Taylor as well for nothing. So we could have 4 signings which cost in total £2million :)

    4. Did we actually spend last season? Dekel Keinan is the only one I can think of. Mostly loans.

    5. M'boro basically bought a new starting 11. The likes of Willo Flood who couldnt hack it here at city is there. Boyd is also a fairly lazy player, mainly a poacher, whilst Goodwille is a workhorse. And our track record for buying players from the SPL has been good. Rae (when he first signed), Burke, Super Kev and Ross.

    6. Don't think you'll hear much complaining from certain clubs in the football league lol.

goodwillie has so far in his career proved to be a 1 in 4 striker, and thats in the SPL. for £2m, you'd want a better record than that, especially as the standard in the championship is much more demanding.

as for signing free transfers, the problem with that is that in general they are on higher wages than if you pay a fee for them, which means that if they turn out to be cr*p then you're stuck with them, like we were with capaldi and rae for example. people seem to think that signing a load of free agents is good business, but they conveniently forget that we've paid over the odds in terms of wages to secure them because other clubs have to be fended off to sign them <ok>
