What a contrast 100 years on with most of Europe united by a common currency, free movement of people, steadily improving standards in health, education and general living standards. Compare our generation with that of our great-grandparents in the 30s. In Southern Europe many more people worked on the land. At the time when Laurie Lee travelled to Spain, many were peasants. Contrast that to the present day.

So Cameron is thwarted by the EU. I would have thought it more prudent for his cabinet members to show a bit of diplomacy and keep quiet. Instead we have Hammond and Hunt opening their big mouths to call other EU heads "cowards" on this of all days. Whatever the rights and wrongs of the EU, it was borne out of a Continent that tore itself apart in 2 WWs and the war that ensued in the former Yugoslavia in the early 1990s?

Anyone else see Lana Del Rey at Glasto? Really mumbly and unconvincing. Lucky she sounds okay on record...

Yes I was disappointed with that performance, especially after how brilliant the "Ultraviolence" album is..

I'm not a fan of hers anyway. That said, I've not seen any Glasto sets, including the ones I was actually looking forward to like Elbow and Arcade Fire.

Elbow and Arcade Fire were both excellent. You'll find them both on the I-Player.

Lana sounds good on record (and works with some great writers - Video Games is probably the best pop song this century). She consistently sounds like she can't be arsed live though.

She's on BBC 3 now, followed by Jack White. She does sound a bit half-arsed.
