Money talks & bullsh!t walks. If he (RD) had really wanted to keep Poyet, then he should not have replaced Riga with Coco the Clown. The "3 million euros" () he has just spent on Igor Ventekele could also have been spent on bribing Diego to stay. Conversation as follows: RD: "Hi Diego. You will play every game for us next season, can leave for Arsenal next summer with our blessing, and here is £20,000 a week".
It's worth saying at this point that Archie Edwardes and Nick Pope are both fantastic prospects, and they have both signed up, praising the club as well. The other great prospect is Gomez, he's turned 17 but hasn't left, hasn't signed. Let's see what he does. Ahearne-Grant might turn out to be in this category, this season should tell us.
I am severely disappointed Poyet has decided against signing for us, but in truth I won't blame him. My anger at the situation stems from not seeing Poyet play out more of his career at Charlton as I've now seen the player that he is and it will be a big loss. However, I think with what happened in February was little short of a farce, and you can see why that would make him question signing a new deal. However we look at it - with RD deciding to hold of on contract talks till the end of the season, he pulled a deal for Poyet and sanctioned a deal for Wiggins. That right there sent the wrong message to Hamer, Morro, Poyet, Wood etc etc. They would have to question why he was more deserving than the next. We have now lost 2 first team players who would have a combined transfer value of several millions for nothing (Poyet could still go abroad); that isn't good management. I accept the responsibility has to be shared between RD and the old regime in regards to that, but we had long enough to tie him down and we failed.
@ Super Katrien Meire told fans two months ago that Diego signing a new contract would depend on two factors- 1. Who the manager was. Spectacular **** up ensued, even by RD standards. 2. Investment /ambition around first team squad. Spectacular **** up ensued..with Hamer & Dervite going. Is it any wonder that Diego looked at this ravaged carcass of a football club & decided to quit?
Don't blame him for jumping ship, but yeah I would have loved him to sign a contract and play til Jan. Good luck to him, but shame it's not in a Charlton shirt, I won't boo him when he returns to the valley... unless it's via Millwall, Palace or a very similar level championship side to us on a side note, I didn't vote for him POTY as I thought it was unfair as he was only half a season.
These are my thoughts, they are not influenced by what people post on another forum. What makes you think I haven't looked critically at RD? Just because I don't agree with you, doesn't make me wrong. You have a way of trying to rubbish someone else's opinion if it doesn't tie in with your own. This, for me, detracts from some of the good points you make. I don't think that what is going at Charlton is perfect. I too would like a British owner with British players who only live within a bus ride from the Valley. But i am a realist, I don't live in a fantasy Ron Manager world, jumpers for goalposts, marvellous.
I have no ill feeling toward poyet, i just cannot believe some sort of a deal was not put together in quick time for him to stay even just one season. It's inexcusable. We should have got millions for him in a year or two. I can't believe it. Calamity.
Steady on Sid, or Matron will have to be called... Out of interest, and you have been one of the more positive about RD up to now, what is your tipping point where Roly is concerned ? Mine is replacing the Sam Bartram statue behind the West Stand with one of Hercule Poirot.
Gutted... If nothing else last season was great for seeing a 5-6 home grown players (or previous youth players) in the starting line up.. and Poyet was a shining light within that bunch, looked like he had real class. Still that's modern football
I dont understand all the fuss. We have got rid of a teenager who thought he was too good for our club despite only being in the team for half a season. All he did was pass the ball sideways. Jordan Cousins can play that role just as well as Poyet. On top of that we have brought in a box to box midfielder desperate to make a name for himself who can score goals. All we need are a couple more Johnny Foreigners to bulk up the ranks and we are sorted for the season.
Jesus - the abuse he's getting on twitter and Facebook is crazy! I'll just ask one question - how would you feel being told no new contracts were to be discussed till the end of the season but the club then make an exception to one player? You go on to have a fine season, win POTY and now have a host of big clubs vying for your services? The club dropped the ball - that's how I see it. Now we have to ensure we learn from this mistake and get Gomez signed up ASAP.
Yes Charlton have lost a possible £5m on transfer fee BUT who has lost this money..... Douchbag and Murray have.... not the fans, not the employees but the Douch.... his error.....his £5m pissed up a wall. What the fans have lost is seeing a very good young player develop in the first team which is a damn shame. This does make me question renewal of Valley Gold though
i'm devastated, mine came out last month. on one hand, the lady wendy does a bang up job, on the other, i hate it that players like poyet abuse it and use it just for personal gain. maybe they should have a "fit and proper" childs test when they sign up
I'm gutted his gone and bear no grudge, his sort spell in the team not only gave a little excitement in the terrible games we played but he also helped keep us up. With all the problems behind the scene with owners wanting more control then they should I'm not surprised he has taken the option to try somewhere else. And with regards to losing a potential fee, let's be honest guys (and gals) that would have gone to Roland and his network, NOT the club. Good luck Poyet
