QPR star Joey Barton defends Liverpool's Luis Suarez over Chiellini bite JOEY BARTON has sensationally defender Liverpool striker Luis following his bite on Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini. By Chisanga Malata/Published 25th June 2014 The Liverpool star appeared to bite the Juventus defender on the shoulder in the 79th minute of Uruguay's 1-0 victory over Italy yesterday. Chiellini immediately showed the referee what appeared to be bite marks on his shoulder after the incident, but the official took no action. Suarez's bite on the Juve defender is the third time in his career that he has bitten a member of the opposing team. In 2010 he bit PSV star Otman Bakkal on the shoulder whilst playing for Ajaz, and in 2013 he bit Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic. Suarez's latest biting scandal has caused outrage amongst football fans around the world, with thousands of them demanding that the striker be handed a lengthy ban. But astonishingly Barton has defended the under-fire striker and claimed that the people have to deal with him crossing the line. âHe's a winner. If that means he occasionally steps over the line between right and wrong, than thats what comes with the territoryâ Joey Barton Speaking on Twitter Barton said: "I love Suarez. I love his passion for the game. I would have him on my team everyday of the week. I am also aware you can't defend him here. "All things considered I'd rather receive a bite than a leg breaking challenge. Whilst he should be punished, it is not the end of the world. "He's a winner. If that means he occasionally steps over the line between right and wrong, than thats what comes with the territory..." "Nobody's perfectâ¦" Barton's defence of Suarez has enraged the Twitter world and many users have slammed the QPR midfielder. Sophie Barkley tweeted: Only Joey Barton would attempt to defend Suarez on Twitter. "It's not the end of the world" "Nobody's perfect" eLi tweeted: Of course you'd expect that from Joey Barton, he's no different from Suarez. (Attitudinal wise not talent of course) LRT." Ρaulærwe Robertson tweeted: "No surprise Joey Barton, notorious for his own woeful disciplinary record on and off the pitch, is one of the few defending Mad Dog Suarez."
I don't see anything wrong with what he said. Is it the end of the world? Is everybody perfect? He did say that there is no defence for what he did and that he should be punished.
Just like the knobs on twitter who pick up on parts of sentences so that they can come out to everyone as being outraged and/or aggrieved.
I think the papers have sunk their teeth well and truly into the whole affair. I think what Hodgson has done, or should I say, hasn't done is a bigger crime.
How can they say that Barton is defending Suarez when he said "I am also aware you can't defend him here." ? Beggars belief.......
I don't think Joey is really defending him. He says that he should be punished for his actions, rightly so, but it is not as if he is going to end a player's career by giving him a hickie.
Ridiculous article. JB talking sense on this and isn't defending anyone. The independent has an article saying the same thing effectively. http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/worldcup/luis-suarez-bite-lets-move-past-the-shock-value-and-get-some-perspective-9563690.html
Barton is really growing on me off the pitch he talks sense All Suarez did was to use his body to his advantage albeit by foul means and he gets a punishment as he has been caught 3 times To make a quantum leap from that to the entire beautiful nation of Uruguay being called cannibals shows to me who are the sick nation and people. Their are dirty Footballers in the game there are clean players and England want clean players... the hypocritical English way ... cheap iMO coming from a nation full to the brim with dirty evil cheats who generally stab each other in the back. Pleased Barton has the courage to speak out about football I heard the press today put down Russia mocking that Cappello bloke just because he failed with England. Elbows and pre meditated tackles and holding now need to be punished IMO Any player will use his weapons to gain an advantage on the field. Suarez bites and I am guessing he always has from birth as when he misses a chance he bites his hand every time. Bite kick and punch all the same to me ... passionate emotions which will continue in football ... what FIFA had done now has given themselves a massive problem with future instances of rule breaking ... if they catch them?
I see your point DT but I think the judgement is made on the arbitrarily chosen Western idea of civilised behaviour that says a bite is morally worse than an elbow (even though nobody has ever been rendered unconscious by a bite). Then again, spitting at players and abusing them is still more condemned and less damaging. Someone needs to set the rules and ethics and they'll always meet someone's standards but not others. But those at FIFA would never tackle the incessant dirty tactics because they're too commonplace.
Peoples general reaction to biting does seem a little odd AS JB says i would rather be bitten than be on the receiving end of face breaking elbows and malicious leg breaking tackles all of which i think would not have received the attention or punishment this has. Not defending Suarez - he deserves everything he has been given but there is a real lack of consistency, maybe due the lack of any actual punishments for this specific offense of biting, it just gets lumped under unsportsmanlike conduct. Maybe its time to define all possible on field nasties with their appropriate bans at a least then everyone knows where they stand. i'll let you fill out the punishments... 1. Biting - 10 match ban 2. Wedgie 3. Poke in the eye 4. Chinese burn 5. Pinching - hard 6. Saying things about someones mum 7. Pulling hair 8. Threatening to have your dad beat up their dad 9. delivering a wet willie 10. Pulling shorts down 11. Scratching their face 12. Flobbing a greeny on their back.... All heinous crimes on the football field i am sure you will agree.
13. Putting someone in a headlock and rubbing your knuckles across their scalp. Thought better of saying "across their head."
