aye, always have to appreciate a decent live band! i find i dont have much time for bands that can't perform live very well.

and don't blame ya!

 

I'm looking forward to reading it. Would like to read more about anti-nazi movements, and general life in Nazi Germany. However, like you say, its rarely picked up on.

They've gotta be used to it! I certainly wouldnt like it haha.

 

Too right no time for a band that can't play live. Lost interest in loads that way ... and started following others because of how good they were even though hadn't liked their music at first.

So question 1 - best live performance you've seen by a band you didn't think you liked?

Question 2 - worst live performance you've seen by a band you did like?

Edit - best by band I didn't like - Meat Loaf - hate his stuff really but he puts on a brilliant show.
worst by band did like - The Electric Soft Parade, loved their albums but so bad live put me right off.

can't remember all the performances so just out the top of my head from what i CAN remember

1 - pigeon detectives. hate the band. hate all that horrible horrible indie crap that followed in the wake of the arctic monkeys. hate their songs. but went to see them the other month (for free mind. mates brothers band were roped into a tour with them so got free tickets and went along to support them like) and honestly the front man's a genius. he knows all the right moves, knows how to involve every single member of the audience ( not me like though.. i was up in the balcony looking down ) and just seemed to keep them all just entirely captivated.
still hate their songs like

2. deep purple. a while back. expected them to be poor i suppose, since obviously they've aged. but it was back when i was like 14 or so and listened to them purely because of my parents. was expecting the classics to stand out though, but nothing really happened. droned through them all, i got quite bored. what do you expect from aging rock stars i guess though. hardly any of them are the original members anyway


what about you? or anyone else?

by the way, these two bands do NOT reflect my general music taste whatsoever. like, it's entirely different.

 

Best performance by a band I dont really like probably watching Status Quo, admittedly...put on a fantastic show
Worst Performance for a band I liked...Innerpartysystem, fell in love with them a few years back...went to Leeds to watch them....left after half an hour

EDIT: In hindsight, the best perfomance by band ive never liked....went to watch The Ting Tings with my brother...he likes all the crap Radio 1 tell you to like...so I tagged along...after all, it was a nightout. And left after having a really good time. Put on a suprisingly good show....and the lead singer is gorgeous!

 

I cant stand any of the clangy Indie ****e either...I like The Cribs...and thats about it for the whole Curly haired, Topman shirt wearing, NME reading brigade 'music'

 

yer i like the cribs and that's about it. arctic monkeys too i've got a lot of respect for, well, Alex Turner mainly. 6 albums in 5 years and he's only 25, the guy's a genius. got a lot of respect for the way they've evolved. changed their style each album, much unlike other bands who try to copy their OWN sound on their second album and it just turns out awful. makes me laugh how 'fans' moan and moan when they dont churn out the same generic crap over and over again.

 

Agreed I love the guy. Seems to be turning a bit mad though. Doesn't seem to like the fame and media **** he has to put up with

 

REP! for this entire comment. I've been telling people for ages now, that what Arctic's are doing is brilliant. And people have still just gone on about sodding Mardy Bum. Alex Turner, is our generations Ian Curtis I'd say...just minus the suicide.

 

Yeah like I said saw Meat Loaf once. Hated his music but went to the gig because we hardly ever get big names come here. He had a broken leg and it was in a cast. But the guy put so much effort in and was so good live I actually really enjoyed it and was really impressed with him. He was sweating buckets for most of the gig and I was in the first few rows and could see the pain on his face at times but he just kept going. Still don't like his material mind and i'd never buy one of his albums but the guy is a pro and on that day at least one hell of a live act.

Bad. Electric Soft Parade. Indie band very highly regarded for a while and did a brilliant debut album which I loved. They were one of the bands I most wanted to see at Glasto (2002 I think) but they were truly awful. Couldn't sing, couldn't play, was truly painful. Didn't help that i'd bigged them up to a couple of my mates and was left feeling like a twat because they had trusted me that they were worth seeing and as a result missed another decent band (can't remember who now).

But Elbow that year were immense. Got me name credited on their Cast of Thousands Album for singing along ... "We still believe in love ... so **** you!!"

 

dont blame him. bet he gets bombarded every day. they always try to stay out the spotlight other than for the music, which is also something to admire
he's an incredibly shy and withdrawn guy apparently though (our 'manager' used to manage them when he lived in sheffield before they hit it big and got a shiny new manager from their label). you wouldn't think it when on stage though. the guys got some decent stage presence.

ha don't get me wrong, i still think their first album is decent. it's good for what it is, and i still enjoy it, but it was 5 years ago when i was 14 and it was all big stuff. i like how they've matured and evolved musically as they've matured themselves.

 

Elbow, great live band and great tunes. Lyrically my favourite band ever I think. "Friend of Ours" breaks my heart every time I hear it, brings me to tears if i'm not careful.

 

Need to give Arctics another listen I think. Got the first album and liked it but just seem to have missed out on the rest. Sort of got tired of the genre so haven't been listening to that sort of stuff recently. Both of you are so enthusiastic though i'm thinking I've missed out on something good.

aye, the other albums are quite different.
as for indie stuff, they stand out entirely. they did it well, they did it how it should've been done. everything else was just a poor imitation.

Whats makes Elbow even better is that Guy Garvey is one of the easiest people in the world to talk too. A Geniunely nice chap, which for a lot of musicians is hard to say.
