Yes, I too hope he proves to everyone he's worth the effort. There is talk of Ashley Cole but I really don't think he'd work out, however, Frank Lampard is a true professional and I would welcome him with two arms. The is also talk of ......... Have mixed feelings about this as Rio will fit in with the squad, known for dressing room banter, is a leader and does still have heaps of ability for our level but the tone it sends out isnât great. Lets hope that soon after this one they announce Tom Ince to balance it out and show they are looking at the bigger pitcher If Fat Frank and Cashley et al start turning up then Iâll get really worried. WhileArry may not care beyond this season because he wont be here- with signings like this weâll have to start all over again next summer regardless of what league where in.
Has anyone tweeted TF yet to ask him why the heck he hasn't kept his word? (I don't tweet.) Can't see Rio and Ashley "I saw and heard everything m'lud" Cole working together.
Nothing confirmed yet but will welcome him, experience needed in prem & he's got that, if he comes give him a chance.
I dont like the idea of signing him but im trusting Tony that he knows this time what he is doing. In this Rio case its not about his age its all about his motivation and fitness. If those two things are ok then we will have a real reader in our ranks. Just remember ol'Frankie McClintock.....We will have to wait and see.
Rio was injured quite bit last couple of seasons i wonder how much he'll play....what really worries me is if we play Dunne and Rio at the back we will have to play such a deep defensive line they will be stepping on Greens toes. I don't think we can judge every player just on there age, look at Mario Yepes 38 playing at the world cup and Bolton did it with the golden oldies a few years back.
I'm not over the moon about this signing, if it's true, but think of it this way: We all thought we might get 6-8 players in this Summer. And we all thought that 2 or 3 of these would be the older, experienced type and the rest would be younger players for the future. So, if Rio is one of those older players then it's not so bad, as long as we get some younger players in as well. And we might find that a younger, good defender would love to come in and work with Rio, so it might help us make another good signing.
Just seen on skysports we are 5/4 to sign Hangeland and Crouch just bit worrying! Some good news is we're second favorites after Everton to sign Caulker.
We will be running out to the dads army theme tune unless TF tells him he cant sign anyone over 27. He should resign if thats not acceptable.
There is an assumption that signing Rio means that TF & Co have not learnt the lesson to not sign ageing mercenaries. I've just read the whole thread and there is a fair mix of opinions from good pro who might bring stability to ageing crock that should be avoided. The key missing information is his future performance! There can be no doubt that signing Rio is a risk. However, risk management is one thing TF seems rather good at in the long term. If he does turn out in The Hoops, I will be cheering for him as will most if not all of you. Meanwhile, all we can do is wait to see how the future unfolds. I would, however, like to start the PL with a team that does not have the oldest average age of players if at all possible - please?
