No, get someone in who can get England into the Euros and let him get to work straight after world cup. Do you think its right to have a foreign manager? I couldnt care less, just the best man for the job who is tactically astute
Loser manager, managing a team of losers/bottlers = losing Henderson, Gerrard, Johnson, Jagielka, Baines all serial losers. Need players and manager with winning mentality
Dalglish, Rafa, Souness, Evans, Houlier.... they all give Woy a run for his money. You have had some genuinely terrible managers havent you. I couldnt cope with dave so you guys must be on suicide watch.
But doesnt a good coach get them playing that way? On paper other teams with worse players than us look far better
Young side, football has improved massively. Heading home but tough group with well established teams. We are not that good so he does as well as he can. I certainly don't want to go back to the archaic way of conceding possession, hitting long balls, squeezing through then bombing out. Problem is we lack quality in key areas. Hart is suspect, Jagielka not good enough, no leadership in back four, Gerrard will go and we have no natural holding midfielder. That is a major problem when both full backs are not great defensively. We have abundance of attacking midfield talent. Ox, Barkley, Sterling and Sturridge is a good start in terms of movement/flair. Henderson, Wilshere are good options in midfield. If Rodwell fancies taking the splinters out his arse, Van Gaal sorts out Jones and the likes of Shaw, Stones and Flanagan continue to progress who knows.
Improved? We were 2nd in our group 4 years ago. We're 4th now. Or do you mean SINCE the last world cup. Well... we were in the knockouts in European Cup. The previous manager had over 66% win ratio. The current manager (just two years later) will have below 50% win ratio if he fails to win last game of group. (frankly unlikely to do so). From winning over 2/3rds of games to winning less than half in a two year time frame shows we are getting worse... not better. We were 5th ranked by FIFA in 2012, two years ago. We were 10th ranked by FIFA before World Cup- estimate is 19th by end of world cup (depending on how other results go). Yet we're improving?
That's what happens when you pick a team of losers led by a specialist-in-failure captain who have just choked the league
Style of football. i.e. rather than being unable to pass a football, sitting with ten men behind the ball, hoping to score from a set piece before a "brave" exit, we actually had a go. We deserved more out of both games but defensive frailties and naivety f**ked us. We will need to improve our win ratio to actually progress further in a competition, but at least we now play in a way where we are not just sitting ducks for the big nations. On paper, I don't think we're that good. We've had far better teams in the past. Sven/Fabio/Hoddle may have progressed further (I don't think they did a bad job all told), but they did have much better defensive options. We've gone from having a variation of the likes of Ferdinand, Campbell, Adams, Terry, Carragher, King, Keown, Southgate to Cahill and Jagielka with Jones and Smalling waiting in the wings. Solid pros, no leadership or star quality. Its not like we had a load of better options. Joe Hart - decent keeper who will get better. No Seaman or Shilton though is he. So its hardly any surprise that it is defensive woes that have seen us slip out. The only criticism I'd have of Hodgson is could have got his defence a little better drilled. I've enjoyed watching us for once though. It was always going to be a case of taking a few steps backwards to go forward. The good thing is we have a decent group to get through to the Euros and it allows us to perservere on this path of updating our football. England, Switzerland, Slovenia, Estonia, Lithuania, San Marino - That should allow us to develop the side while playing competitive football. The worst thing we can do is scrap it and start again.
