I've long thought that Hodgson is getting his own back on Gerrard for forcing him out at Anfield. Think about it: not only is Gerrard captain of one of the all-time worst England squads (with only the 1974, 1978 and 1994 teams managing to do worse) and Gerrard has looked hopelessly out of his depth in the World Cup and copped a lot of flank from the fans and the press for his performances - and just to stick the knife in further, Hodgson asks him to stay on knowing full well the response will be to demand that Gerrard retire from international football, leaving Gerrard with the options to carry on amid wide derision or meekly surrender and retire.
