Should he play Gerrard in the last game or drop him?

This will be his last tournament so dropping him would look harsh and perhaps disrespectful to a loyal servant to the national cause.

That said we don't get many opportunities to give game time to young larkers in this kind of environment.

Should he be ruthless and play a team for the future, Barkley, Lalana, Shaw and the like or stick with what has let us down?

Tough call for Woy and I think he'll bottle it.

I think he has to put a team of players out that haven't had a game yet.

I'd like to see some changes.

    Forster
    Jones - Cahill - Smalling - Shaw
    Lallana - Lampard - Wilshire - Milner
    Lambert - Rooney

I'm no fan of Smalling but if he's going to be in England squads I want to see him tested against a Costa Rica team playing well.

Was thinking the same earlier and we should give the young guns a go in a squad that has some credibility moving forwards. That means keeping the likes of Rooney, Cahill et al who will play more tournaments for us in the future.

    Hart
    Johnson Cahill Jones Shaw
    Henderson Wilshere
Sterling Rooney Lallana (preferably chamberlain if fit)
    Sturridge

Sterling really looks up to it and I think the experience will prove more beneficial to him than Barkley, who just doesn't look ready yet. Same goes for Lallana and Chamberlain.

Rooney and Sturridge will still be our forward pair in the next tournament unless new **** hot striker comes along in that time (unlikely) or Sturridge proves to be a flash in the pan.

Shaw could do with a run out. Cahill and Jones is looking, at present, our most likely combination. Start off their repertoire. Wilshere should be one of those key players the team is built around. Henderson I don't think will ever be a key figure but will probably always be sniffing around the fringes of the squad and it won't do any harm to see if him and Wilshere work together well, the only other options in the squad are aged and won't be with us next time.

Don't see the point in giving another keeper a run out, Hart will be in our goal for the next decade unless injury forces him out.

probably.. but nope, he's just nothing special, not good enough to play internationally, hart was really good a couple years ago but he can't seem to play in big games, he makes too many mistake

in 2 yrs time, england will have a bloody good attack, but the defensive side is so poor

Hoddle thinks Gerrard should stay on and quoted Pirlo as an example of old fogeys carrying on playing.

Not quite sure about that Glennis.

I'd be very surprised if he doesn't give chances to the youngsters now. There's an argument for picking Gerrard as a mark of respect but I really don't like this thing of players retiring themselves at a time that suits them e.g. after a defeat or after they don't get picked. It just seems a bit soft to me. They should play until they're not good enough or not wanted. I don't want him to pick Gerrard if it's just for the sake of one last appearance.

    I'd pick:

    Hart
    Johnson Jones Cahill Shaw
    Henderson Wilshere
    Oxlade Barkley Rooney
    Sturridge

Those attacking 4 can move about and swap around. Rooney doesn't have to stop out wide obviously.

He knows what he's on about does Hoddle.

I don't want Roy gone, but when he does leave I'd love Hoddle as next manager.

Anyone who remembers the team Hoddle forged between 96 and 98 will know that he's a very good manager.

I'd give him the job in a second but disagree with him on Gerrard.

Why do you two want Hoddle so much? I understand you're both quite young as am I, but my old man said he lost his marbles when in charge of England.

He was sacked for non-footballing reasons ie. he said something stupid.

He was a great manager for England.

Had the best win ratio since Alf Ramsey, and only Capello has beaten him. Played a good brand of footie, played technical stuff.

A much better choice than Woy or any other Englishman around atm.

But his point made sense. Pirlo can be Italy's best player while being a complete liability off the ball. Gerrard is way fitter than him but obviously not as good on the ball. Swings and roundabouts. Clearly you don't have to be in your 20s to play international football. If Hodgson doesn't fancy him then that's fine, but I hope he doesn't retire himself. I think it's arrogant and disrespectful retiring from international duty, especially when you've achieved nothing. The problem might be finding someone to replace him. We've got a few dynamic, fast midfielders but not too many holding players like Gerrard who can spray the ball around, and the only one anything like a decent age is Huddlestone.

I don't remember his team so can't comment, but I think every England manager gets the same treatment, you're basically guaranteed to be criticised and humiliated when you leave the job. My opinion is just based on hearing him talk and the respect other former players and pundits seem to hold him in.

If Woy sticks with 4-2-3-1 then Gerard shouldn't play even if he were 25. He's not and never will be a defensive midfield player.
