Just imagine there was a club dumb enough to pay a player like Wayne Rooney his £300,000 a week demand
As overpaid as he clearly is, there are players far more overpaid (mostly at QPR). Given the resources of United and Rooney's contribution to those resources off the pitch, I doubt it's too huge an expense really.
Compare what Rooney contributes at the World Cup and European Championships with those who earn as much as three, four or even five times less and he is not just a tad overrated but as completely delusional about his self worth as the club that actually thought he was worth it. For £300,000 a week they'd tempt match winners of the highest calibre, no point talking about what Rooney contributes in midfield and defence if he consistently fails to deliver in his primarily role up front. For his £300,000 a week you'd expect the same hat trick performances that Benzema put in last week, every week! Is Rooney really worth £300,000 in wages? Absolutely not, his goal scoring record is actually fairly poor in the Premier League for such an obscene salary and his goal tally in major international tournaments is pretty pathetic compared to others he and his agent clearly thinks are in his level. His goal record in the qualifying stages mean nout if he fails to make any impact in the post qualification stage. He will never be the match winner his wages suggest he should be, he is a £70,000 a week player and United should have let him leave years ago.
Honestly... forgetting that Rooney is a horrible human being and looking at it purely from a footballing perspective: I'd take Rooney into my team if he were on lower wages. Probably not as a starting player anymore (hard to see him starting ahead of SASAS)- but he has a lot to offer as a squad player and for rotation and would start for most teams in the country. £300k per week is really rather silly for him though... but as pointed out... United is a very rich club. They're paying £10mill more on him a year than he really warrants- but £10mill for United is not the same as £10mill for most clubs in the country. It's a fortune for most- but merely a large chunk of cash for United.
I think Rooney could have been a £300,000 player as he does have certain attributes that are naturally better than almost any other player on this whole planet. I think Sir Alex Ferguson well and truly messed up his development, even to the point of massively mismatching Rooney's best attributes to the correct position they belong. Let's be honest about Rooney's best skills, they are phenomenal. And they come naturally as well. He had the making of possibly one of the finest central midfielders in football history and it is only when you break down what he does brilliantly that it can be seen. He tracks back, his passing is extremely efficient both long and short range, his stamina levels are off the charts, he reads the opposition play, he envisions what his players are going to do, he never stops moving, he sees openings before most others, his can actually tackle and anticipate the pass or shot to block and intercept. It is very likely now to late to train an aging dog new tricks but if 6 or 7 years ago Ferguson started melding him into the Central midfield role he would have had real match practice to massively improve those central midfield attributes that come so naturally to him. His supporters keep saying "He does so much more though!" Yes he does, imagine... just imagine... that was his primary role! Is he a £300,000 centre forward? Hell no. Could he have been a £300,000 central midfielder? Maybe but we will never know now, thanks to Ferguson.
STFU His salary is officially £300,000pw. I bet you didn't tell the bank you earned 25% less because of your tax band you stupid mug.
Hes on 250k first. Still obscene but its like swansea paying their players 20quid a day. Its nothing to united and is paid for by tv money. I believe united contribute 180k. Nike about 70k and his last contract gave rooney a bigger slice of his image rights hence the randomly made up 300k figure.
The problem with this thread is nobody knows what anybody earns. No one here knows Rooney personally and nobody has seen his contract. It's all guesswork.
Actually agree with this. When he first emerged I thought he was the spit of Gascoigne and should be playing the same position he did.
