    By far the best team in the group. Commited, fought for each other, good movement both on and off the ball and clinical in front of goal. Viva Costa Rica!!!!!

    The teams which press the ball, in numbers, almost anywhere on the pitch and are full of energy and commitment are showing the rest how its done. Good stuff.

    I'm glad they won, I hope they finish top. Uruguay must be gutted, they probably thought before the match a draw against Italy would be enough, now they have to beat them.

    They have won the group even if we beat them 10-0 as they've beaten the only two teams that can reach 6 points. Goal difference is irrelevant...

    If that's a different thing to hoping that England salvage some pride and beat them handsomely in the final game, then I'm hoping for an England win myself. I don't want to see us finish bottom on zero points.

    Goal difference is the first thing taken into account when two teams are tied.

    The ranking of teams in each group is based on:

    Points in all group matches, with 3 points awarded for a win, one point for a draw and none for a loss.
    Goal difference in all group matches
    Goals scored in all group matches
    Points in matches between tied teams
    Goal difference in matches between tied teams
    Goals scored in matches between tied teams
    Drawing of lots.

    Its doesn't bother me, I'll be watching the Uruguay Italy game anyway as that means something.

    The first tie break is the result between the two teams, then goal difference, then goals scored. Goal difference only takes precedence when more than two teams are level on points...

    Sooper is correct. They changed G/D to second preference years ago.

    What's this? Flyer got something wrong????

    England restoring a little bit of pride means something to me.

    It might be better if they get beaten badly, maybe finally the fa will do something?

    A win might mean Hodgeson is kept and the same thing happens in the Euros....if we qualify.
    But I don't really care either way.

    Also, it is GD unless of course uefa have got it wrong.

    Commentary on Talksport said the result confirmed Costa Rica as group winners, the individual results have been the tie breaker in major competitions for quite a while now...

    That was probably on the basis that they only have England to play next .....

    The rules as I've seen are as follows:

    The ranking of each team in each group shall be determined as follows:

    a) greatest number of points obtained in all the group matches;

    b) goal difference in the group matches;

    c) greatest number of goals scored in the group matches.

    If two or more teams are equal on the basis of the above three criteria, their ranking will be determined as follows:

    d) greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned;

    e) goal difference resulting from the group matches between the teams concerned;

    f) greater number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams concerned;

    g) drawing of lots by the FIFA Organising Committee.

    Bang on SB. High work rate and closing down players to give them no time and make them uncomfortable on the ball is the methodology. We've seen a bit of it in the EPL, and will be something we would do well to focus on for next season. Would require fit young players with a high work ethic though (there might lie our challenge).

    Flyer is quite correct, why would anybody think anything other...? Anybody using Talksport as a source is automatically wrong <laugh>

    On a side-note, f*** no. I do not wish Costa Rica any bloody luck. Selfish twats <wah>

    I feel a relentless, hate-fueled and unhealthy obsession coming on...
