No mate, as Suarez was 20 yards plus beyond where the ball was landing, it was never going to reach him, as had Gerrard not gone for that header Jags was moving forwards to attack the ball, which is why he left the defensive line. Had Jags missed it as well, Cahill was between him and Suarez.
I've no idea what he could have done to prevent it, no. If he doesn't look to move towards the flight of the ball and Gerrard misses it, then he'd have let the ball bounce, which is a no, no. Once Gerrard heads it, he's out of the game, but he'd have still been out of it had he been in line with Cahill.
It isn't true though. I've got a still from the youtube vid and if I could figure out how to post it ... Suarez is inline with Cahill as the ball drops onto Gerrard/Cavani, the speed of play together with the speed at which the ball travels makes it a hard decision for the assistant to call and given we've seen them go either way, it would have been very interesting.
He's a yard beyond Cahill when the ball drops onto Gerrards head - fact. It'd have only been 'interesting' if the lino had made a bloody awful call as it was clear cut.
I personally think he could've cleared it, or at least altered the flight of the ball, if he was in line with Cahill. And if you watch it from the angle from above he actually gets dragged out of position by Cavani and follows him for a bit, and that's why he was out of position when Gerrard made the error.
It's possible I suppose. But equally, had he not moved towards the flight of the ball and Gerrard misses the header, then the ball drops and bounces in no mans land which is a no, no for a CB.
I believe that watching the video I posted from time zero that jagielka was on cavani but both he and Cahill were dropping back, cavani just stopped and jagielka lost him then came out knowing he did then stopped It was already too late to attack the ball with cavani and too late to get back in line with Cahill The fact remains Gerrard was also backing up and that allowed cavani to leap much higher and that leap prevented Gerrard getting real contact The fact also remains the ball went right on Suarez toe without him breaking stride and allowing him to sprint briefly taking Cahill out of it Cahill was on Suarez as the ball was played and he left him go assuming he'd be offside I mean you could just as easily blame sterling for not blocking the keepers kick as single out any one of the three as the prime offender If if if If Cahill tracks no goal If jagielka marks cavani, prob competes for ball no goal? If Gerrard head it any other way at all no goal We may as well wonder if it occurred 5 mins later would Suarez have even be on or what if it hits hart in the chops The videos are glaring on all the goals
please log in to view this image Quality is **** (video was poor) but that white blurry dot just above Gerrard's head is the ball (think I paused the video just before he actually touched it) and Suarez is quite a bit offside. Gerrard made the main error and there's no denying that but that doesn't mean everyone else is blameless.
You are right here, once he does lose cavani by those 2/3 yards he knew he'd not get to it, in an ideal world it would have been like 100s of similar premier league incidents where the cb jumps in that area with the forward. Once he can't he needed to drop off and that's where the two cbs got parted Again 9/10 that doesn't fall so nice and Cahill recovers to force the guy wide
Which is fine but pause it on 0 seconds too and watch cavani and jagielka. My point is cavani is able to move off Where you've paused it Suarez has already move across Cahill and is in behind
