According to Cahill, Suarez's 2nd goal was "very, very fortunate". **** off Gary, it was poor defending, followed by a good finish.
It was a brilliant finish from a world class player, who was arguably the difference between two otherwise quite ordinary sides. But it was a little fortunate that the opportunity fell to him following a long upfield punt. And after working so hard to get back in the game, England are entitled to feel a bit hard done by. Only a bit though.
Well for a start, it was a poor header from Gerrard and then Jagielka went out trying to intercept the ball rather than drop back and follow Suarez.
A ball from the keeper can't put the striker through on goal without someone ****ing up in defense. Two interceptions were missed. It was horrific.
Yeah, I suppose. Still some bad luck involved though. Sometimes every bounce goes against you, it felt a bit like that last night.
Suarez would have been offside for the second goal if Gerrard hadn't headed the ball to him. I know Gerrard couldn't see where Suarez was but if he'd missed it altogether the goal would have been ruled out.
Apart from standing off Calvani, Johnson played ok in both games. He offered more than Baines going forward, and certainly didn't get caught out of position any more than the rest of the back four.
Yes you're right, I suppose what I was struggling to say was that if Gerrard had been a Uruguayan player Suarez would have been offside. Anyway it's academic now.
I say only Cahill looked like he was trying out of the back four. Our full backs were terrible in both games. Baines looked like he was a rabbit in head lights, while Johnson just walked about letting players drift past him. Neither played ok for me.
I think all four of them had times when they looked ok as individuals. Never at any point did they look like a unit, and nor they get much cover from the midfield. There's enough there to work on for the future though. This World Cup was only ever going to be a step on a journey imo. It's just a shame we stumbled so early on
Time to turn Italian. We need them to beat Costa Rica and Uruguay to have any chance of going through. Also, Roy, could you please start with Lallana and Lambert?
