Can England's defending be any more abysmal?

This this this. Did anyone else think when Suarez got that first that Davies wouldn't have given him so much space? And is so much better in the air than Phil.

Thought Cahill had a shocker in the first half too.

It's not a surprise to be fair. Cahill, Jagielka and Johnson aren't of the standard.

just to clarify matters. I was teasing about Alex. He wouldn't be worse than that pair of ****ers at CH.

What I find most disappointing is that, even though we accepted frailties in our defence, we were told this was compensated for by the best attacking line-up we have had since Jack-was-a-lad. Against another defence recognised as poor, where was this great attack?

I have been someone who, once he was appointed, backed Woy, but his team management has been dire. It seems it has been more important to manage the media camp. We have been tactically inept, substitutions have been to supply new energy, rather than new ideas to cause a renewed threat; we have been easily contained and made it very easy for a not-so-good team to look better - but I take nothing from them, they deserved the win.

I went to the ManU vs Everton game back in December; ManU were easily beaten and last night made me think of it. I recall being stood with the Ultras (or whatever they are known as) and looking down on Wayne Rooney putting his heart, soul and class into a game of football, the guy was good, very good. Unfortunately the other players around him had pace and heart, but no soul or class; they let him down, they didn't have the football nous needed at that level. Or, maybe, their manager didn't have the football nous to pull it together. The thing that stood out was that Wayne Rooney did have it and, if he had have had similar players around him the game would have turned on a tanner. Last night brought those memories flooding back.

Steven Gerrard is not a holding midfielder - what a bloody waste of talent.

We knew our defence was crap, if we wanted to remedy that we needed to take Terry, but that simply wasn't considered.

He's played for the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, so isn't that point moot? Or can he switch again? Perhaps he should aim to be the first footballer to complete the full set of home nations.

p.s. not implying that I think Bruce for England is anyway a serious suggestion, Davies is another matter entirely.

He was allowed to switch as he'd only played in a friendly for the Republic.

Excellent post. Plus how did Hendo keep Wilshere out. We needed to keep the ball, Wilshire can do that.

Think it was screaming out for a 3-5-2 to give us more cover at the back.

But he can no longer switch to England as he has been on the bench in a WC Qualifier (or 2) for Northern Ireland. Or does he actually have to have played?

Thought we were talking about defending against Suarez, if so, Bruce was excellent. The one big tackle he put in on the edge of our box against Liverpool at the KC was in fact world class, I can still hear the contact now, it left Suarez on his arse moaning.
