"England fans do not despair. Even in defeat by Uruguay, qualification is possible.

"There are presently 81 different permutations for Group D. Should England lose in Sao Paulo, they need Italy to beat Costa Rica on Friday.

"Then England must overcome Costa Rica next Tuesday and hope Italy simultaneously defeat Uruguay.

"If level, goal difference splits teams, then goals scored, finally results and goals in games involving the teams concerned.

"Should England draw against Uruguay, they would finish level with them at worst with victory against a Costa Rican side beaten by Italy.

"If England beat Uruguay, a draw against Costa Rica could be enough, depending on goal difference."

    One to watch: Edinson Cavani

With all the talk being about Suarez’s return to the side, not so much thought has focused on the presence of £55million striker who will partner the Liverpool forward. Cavani was far from his best against Costa Rica but will be desperate to prove he can perform on the big stage and with Suarez will provide a handful for England’s back four.

Key clash: Luis Suarez vs Gary Cahill

Suarez had very little joy against Cahill’s Chelsea this season – ending up on the losing side twice and failing to score against the England centre back. Uruguay have rushed their talismanic striker back into the side but he still lacks full fitness and Cahill will hope that will make his task a little easier against the Premier League’s top scorer.
    Head-to-head record: Played 10, Uruguay wins 4, Draws 3, England wins 3

If anyone wants to do an Italy v Costa Rica, and or a Japan v Greece thread you're more than welcome. I may not have time as I'm getting ready to go on night shift.

I hope Suarez plays, that means England should be able to dominate the ball with an extra man in midfield.

I also hope Rooney either plays in the middle or not at all.

If they match our midfield, they will beat us.

We have to make the extra man count.

Team is same as Saturday, just Rooney and Sterling swap roles. Let's go for it and not worry about Uruguay...

Best of luck fellas. With Rooney and Sterling in their correct positions you've a very good chance. 2-0 Engerland

(Maybe its be being narrow-minded or summat but those English birds are the best looking yet. Can't beat a fair-haired white bird IMO.)

That's because they are Sun models Swords, not real fans. Looking like that is their talent.

The boy has left for the pub, but its a horrible youth oriented cheap and crap booze one. I've decided that this is not a community experience, unless you are at the game.

3 Spanish officials isnt a good sign, expect Uruguay to be in full on cheat mode and the ref to fall for it.

Why do our defenders look like rabbits in the headlights when they have the ball around their own box?...

So far, he got that handball spot on but the Brazil Croatia ref looked good for a while.

Low quality game so far. One shot each going close. Gerrard's passing has been excellent.

It's quite the opposite imo. No one better to spot a cheat than a Spanish official. This one is very good too so should be no problem for England.

One thing Spanish officials are known for though is that they're very card happy.

Sterling has been awful, I don't think he's made too many passes, he gives the ball away every time.

Passing & ball retention is terrible. What is it about our game that makes us dispose of the ball as soon as we get it?

We almost got done again by a similar training ground corner routine as against Italy.

Heh, the ref should have sent him off. That's a second yellow.

Arrggh, Rooney misses from 3 inches.
